Question Converting 03 exhaust to an 05 and up...Would this work?

Every 5" Exhaust system that I've seen has a 4" down pipe, then goes to 5" to the tail pipe. And all the Cummins 600's seem to have full 5". Is the only difference the small turn-down piece that connects to the turbo? If I switched to a Cummins 600 turn-down pipe, could I use a full 5" exhaust? I have a Super B that required a reducer to work with my factory exhaust. Thanks for any help

Yes, I'm talking about after market. Sorry about that, I meant to put that in the post. Actually, my question confused me! Let me try it again:

After market 5" systems for non-600's all seem to have a 4" down pipe.

After-market for the 600's seem to have 5" from turbo back (true 5" system).

If I replace my turn-down pipe from the turbo (with a 600) could I use a true 5" exhaust? I have Super B, and I had to put a reducer to fit my 3 1/2 down pipe to the turbo 3" exhaust port.

buy the 05 down pipe, and the elbow, factory part, and you can run the 05 and up exhaust.
thats what i did. i bought an 05 MBRP system, cat back, and i bought a factory 05 down pipe and turbo elbow.had to add a piece into the system because my 03 has no cat, never did.
the 03 trucks have a 4"-3.5" elbow(4"on the turbo end,and3.5" on the down pipe end)
then it's 3.5" to the muffler, and from the muffler out,to tail pipe is 4"
now you can run 4" or 5" or 6" all the way back with the elbow and down pipe if not supplied with the system you choose.

Yes, just buy the elbow that bolts to the back of the turbo on a newer truck and you will be able to get a 5" exhaust that won't start out at 3.5" like your 03. The new elbows are 4" in and 4" out. I had an extra elbow but just sold it this weekend.... You will also need the 4" clamp that attachs to downpipe to the elbow and it will run you about $45.00 from the Dodge dealer..

The other option is to get an aftermarket 4" downpipe that bolts directly to the turbo but they are expensive. The 03 I just got rid of had a Banks downpipe on it so my exhaust was a true 4" from the turbo back...

If your truck is nearly stock I would not go with a 5" exhaust. You really need to be pushing quite a bit of horsepower for the 5". If not you will end up losing some low end. I remember some companies offering a full 4" exhaust for the 03's, it included a 4" downpipe instead of the 3.5" stock size. You might want to check into that also.

X2

I also need a larger downpipe for my 03 since I got a Silverbullet. I'm trying to avoid spending any extra $$$ on thing's I dont need. I already replaced my muffler with a pice of 4" and now I need the rest in 4" and something that will bolt up to the SB.

I saw that II sell a downpipe for $150+ a few other odds and ends, but I think I could get some used 600 pices for cheaper

Sorry to question you, but my dealer is telling me different. Are you sure the clamp 52121285AA is the clamp used to clamp the downpipe to the 4" cast elbow fitting?? Thanks,
Tom

The clamp is just a turbo band clamp. You can get one at a cummins dealer or larger truck parts store. The cost about $20. I have one sitting on my desk right now. I needed one and ended up with 3. first one came with the hx40 I bought. The second one I bought since I didn't know the hx40 would come with one. And then the new downpipe for my hx40 came with one. I got turbo clamps coming out of my ears. And now when my new exhaust shows up I will have another one.

Tommygun posted those part numbers after performing the conversion on his truck. I have not purchsed the parts but the Tenafly Dodge website verifies that it is an exhaust clamp.

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
52121285AA $19.75 $0.00 $15.80
