Question What controls the cycling of the grid heaters ????

Are they dependent upon the Air Intake Temperature sensor or are they
on a Timed Circuit ???

Pics of the parts ??

IAT determines whether they come on, ECM controls their cycle frequency and length depending on what the IAT is telling it the temp is.

The ECM also uses the coolant temp sensor too.

On a 12 valve the grids will come on when the intake temp is below 50F and vehicle speed is under 17 mph. The they will only stay on steadily before the engine is started, after it's running they cycle on and off according to intake temp. Coolant temp isn't involved.

I not sure if that's true...

Up here in Idaho (0*F-32*F) I can run to the store (20 miles away) get full engine temp (190*F) and run in and be all of 2 minutes and still get cycling of the grid heaters on next start up...

It's mostly the IAT sensor...
The picture below is my DIRTY MAP and IAT sensor after 6K miles...

The pic below is the location of the two sensor on the engine (24 Valve)

There is a time period (don't ask how long) but it will cycle the grid heaters for like 3 minutes (a guess) or until you exceed 20 MPH...

On the 12v's the IAT is on top of the intake directly behind the intake horn towards the firewall. It has a two wire connector on the top and i beleive it is 3/4" nut.
