Considering a '93 Extended Cab Need Advice

A year or so back I looked at a nice '93 extended cab on a used car lot. Its 2wd 350 dually with the 46re 4 speed auto tranny, copper red and champagne two tone paint. At the time it had just under 80k miles on it and they were asking $10000. I really liked the truck, though I'd rather have a 5 speed... but I didn't have the money, so I went on driving my old truck...

Christmas eve I passed a used car lot and saw the same truck sitting there... now with 82k miles on it and a price of $11000. I went in and talked to the guy about it... claims the guy that bought it last spring had to trade it in on a smaller truck, couldn't get used to the size of it... had a bunch of receipts for work he'd done on it. I got a copy of all of them... mostly new tires, brakes, and some paint work on the front end (I'm assuming it was in a minor accident...I can tell where the work was done on it, it looks good though). The bed had also been Rhino lined.

Anyways, the truck is nice and all original aside from holes being drilled in the bed for a 5th wheel. Its clean, the paint is in good shape, and its a crewcab. But in the back of my mind, I still say $11k is a lot of money for a truck thats going on 14 years old. I've been wanting a Cummins for a while now... my old Ford just won't pull what I want it to pull. I want something that'll handle pulling large old cars long distances.

I know these can be had for a lot less money, but I really like this truck. I prefer the 1st gen bodystyle to the 2nd generation bodystyle, and it seems finding one of these in nice shape with fairly low miles is hard to do. So anyways, I need some input and advice. I figure he'd take $10k for it. Thanks for the help guys...

Wow, that is low mileage!

Just so you know, if you want to pull heavy with the A518, you will need a converter and valve body.

I looked for one for many years. Finally found it (see sig) around 4-5 years ago with 97,XXX. Paid $10K then, Thought it was too much, even for a fairly clean original truck. But they don't make 'em anymore and it was WAY cheaper than a new one which I didn't even want.

The body is what will disappear over time. So for a well maintained truck with low miles AND a good body, you are well ahead and going to have to pay some $$.

Anything is only worth what ONE person is willing to pay.

Main thing is to make sure you are getting what you see, no frame damage, hacked wiring, false miles, etc, etc.

I see a lot of 4x4 club cabs a little below and above the 10K mark. 4x4 seems to be more desirable so you can deduct a little for the lack of a front axle.

My observations,

The auto tranny worries me... it drove good and shifted fine though. How much can it handle without having to do any upgrades to it? I like old Mopars and they're kinda heavy to say the least. Aside from a car trailer the only other thing I'd really be pulling would be a Massey Ferguson 245 tractor.

I'm in South Carolina and it seems that these trucks aren't common out here like they are out in the midwest. The one I'm looking at has a sticker on it from a dealer in Greenville, TX. Watching them on ebay, seems like they go for a lot cheaper out that way.

first gen towing

I paid 12K for mine 3 years ago with 98K on it and the only problem I've had is it could use more power on the hills.Pulling the GN it gets about 10 mpg. since I turned the pump up.

I pull a 5,000lb boat during the summer and up to about 10,000lbs of hay/cattle/whatever off and on with my auto. I'm the 3rd owner and don't know what if any mods have been done too it but it does fine so far.

The Auto is the weak link when you start bombing.

I run a synthetic in mine. I turn off the OD when hauling, that keeps the tranny temps down to 225* max on a hill. I plan on adding a deep pan and an underbed cooler for insurance. From what I understand, you want tranny temps to stay below 200*.

I think the auto is fine if you don't abuse it and pay attention. When it goes, then you have a good excuse for adding a good TC, etc, etc...

By the way, mine is the same color as the one you are looking at.

In those years, Dodge actually called an extended cab a "CREW CAB", confusing though it may be.

I don't think Dodge ever called a four-door truck a crew cab, but instead, called them club cabs; but, then, I could be wrong.

As far as the price is concerned, these trucks will bring almost any price put in the window, providing they look half way decent for the model; and, miles don't seem to hurt the price.

I keep an eye on E-Bay, and more decent 1st.Gen. trucks go over $8,000, than under it.

Of course, there are several rust-buckets on there that will go for less; but, good looking trucks will bring big money.

All the literature I have refers to the extended cab as a club cab.

There were companies doing crew cab conversions, it was a salvaged cab on an extended frame. Titled as the model year of the frame, since the cab and the back doors were the only used parts.
