Conservative Performance
I just picked up a 2005 4x4 single cab long bed 6speed cummins this week. The owner left it completely stock. I want to do some up grades but i want it to be reliable and be able to tow well. My last cummins had alot done and my egts went nuts so I couldnt tow much. I was thinking exhuast, turbo compessor upgrade, intake and a chip. I also want a chip that has the egt readout on it. any advice would be great. thanks

Take a look at my sig...I would consider what I've done to be mild, and quite under control. I'm currently running the Smarty on Revo SW5 (90hp program) with everything on default. I have to load my truck heavy and hard, plus be up in the higher elevations, to get my temps up above 1300. Only thing holding me back right now is a better clutch...and an empty wallet !!!

A ddp cool hose is a intake tube and a raptor 100 is a lift pump. I dont know why he used a boost fooler but it increases your boost while under heavy loads.

No you won't need bigger injectors. You don't even have to do a turbo to get conservative power. The stock he351 can handle close to 500hp just fine. Intake, programmer of some sorts and gauges would be what I look at. towing you won't be wanting to tow with 500hp so the he351 can handle it. If you want to do a turbo upgrade you need to look at something like a HTT 62/65-13 ss or II Phat shaft with a 65 wheel. You can do a 71 wheel and it would be plausible to tow with a 6 spd, but the 65 wheel would be better.

My truck was one of the "lucky" ones that did not like the boost fooling the Smarty provides. I couldn't get above stock boost at all, no matter what setting I ran on the Smarty. It would spike to 32psi and then drop to 28. Now, with the boost fooler, it holds steady at 34ish psi and a slight haze at WOT on SW5. Trust me, I'd rather have spent the money on something else... Not a rant...I'm totally satisfied with the Smarty

On their lower settings, you can improve mileage and performance, and their higher settings will support pretty much anything you might add later.
They are both kind of an "all in one" product. If you mod your intake and exhaust it will just enhance their performance. They both can be installed in a couple of hours, and removed just as easily. If at some later date you would like to play with a programmer(Smarty/Bullydog/PPE), you can stack them, or you can sell them no problem on these forums.
Of the two I mentioned, the TST is my favorite, I still play with mine when my Smarty software acts up. TST is a very wide spectrum fueling box, it comes with 4 programs, Economy, Standard, Early twins, Late twins. Within those programs it has 9 tq settings and 9 hp settings, 81 different combinations per program, and all are adjustable on the fly with a remote in the cab! You do have to be careful of the higher settings and stay within their recommendations for this box, or you will break something.

If you get too much power under the hood, you may want to do a torque converter upgrade. Mine was stock till 2 months ago and when i would tow my converter would slip uphill and enventally wore the little welded feet off the converter. I would i mean if you had the money, do a full trans. upgrade.

The edge isnt all that bad unless you use the unlock code. My old truck had the tst on it and ran mid egts. Id go with the edge because ive had better experience with my edge than my old tst.(05.5 dodge reg. cab with mbrp exhaust, tst, suncoast flexplate, helix cam, k and n air intake, and autometer gauges.) Mine kept triggering dtc codes about the fuel delivery when i would tow.

You don't have to run a smarty all out! Had a Edge ez and kind of liked it, quad box, liked it, had a TST, "still have, for now", liked it and now have a smarty and I love it!
