Computer Help

Hey Guys a question for some of the more computer literate than me.....

A couple of days ago I was hit pretty bad by a Trojan and a couple of viruses. I was running Zeroknowledge Freedom antivirus and it didnt catch any of it.

Anyway, I seem to have eradicated the virus but my computer will only operate in safe mode. Any idea how to restore windows (Win 98 first ed) ??

Thanks in advance.

Windows 98?

That's so 80's of you.

Sorry, I can't remember how to.

I'll bump this up for you, and see if I still have my 98 books lying around somewhere.

I'm no expert, but when I have something like that going on, my reaction would be to get whatever data I wanted off of it and start from scratch....

I know, reinstalling the operating system and all your software and drivers plus downloading updates is a pain, but you will know it's back to original condition.

OK To restore the registery Start the computer in dos mode, and type in Scanreg /restore note the blank space before the / Now select a date the computer was working and follow the directions on the screen . This will save your bacon and you will not have to do a full windows installation with all the problems that brings. Have a good one !! using controll key on boot up will give you dos options usually

I was trying to think of how to bandage up the registry without loosing anything..

Good plan Duelin.. Everyone should make a backup of their registry for problems like this. The trojans alter your registry and render windows un-useable. There are good registry editing programs at http://www.snapfiles.com and most are free.

I use Regedit.. Good program..

Luckily., Im just waiting for the power supply for my new machine....but Im trying to save some stuff thats on the old machine. Hopefully, when I get the new machine finished, I can resurrect the old one. The net is getting pretty dangerous - I guess I MUST make a point of backing up and spend more time on prevention.

Thanks guys.

If you only want the information/data off of the old computer you could just take the hard drive out and install it as a second hard drive in another fully functional computer. That way the computer will boot normally and you will then have access to your disk.

Assuming you have access to another computer.
