Computer accuracy?

Hi guys, I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to register.

02' with 53K on the ticker. I've read alot about the over head computers milage discrepancies. I'm on stock 3.55's and 265x75x16's, 6 speed, 4x4. It showed 17.4 last tank but I calculated myself at 18.9mpg. Most guys say the computer 'over estimates' milage. How far off is it? any type of correction?

Thanks, great forum too!

I thought it under estimated. Mine does anyway. It is usually off by 1-2 MPG as compared to what I calculate by hand.

Do you reset the AVG mpg between tanks?

If not that could be why its not close, mine was within .25 mpgs ususally, at least it was before I fell under the sway of the dark side.

To reset average, have display showing avg. hold both buttons down untill it reads zero.

This truck was used when I got it and had no manuals or any type of instruction, so I dont know how to do anything. I just realized it had different functions about 3 weeks ago. I'm sure I'll figger it out eventually.

Well it might be in your best intrest to get an owners manual, to save time from having to look up or ask about other simple things such as this. There are many things that the owners manual states to do, or not to do, and by following the maintence schedule, you should be able to get the most for your money.

I'm not trying to be rude, just trying to help out our fellow CTD owners.

If you don't want to buy the manual from the dealer (I've heard that the prices are high) you might find one on ebay.

Good luck.
