Compressor O-ring?

I rebuilt my turbo over the weekend, HX35/40, and when I disassembled it there was no o-ring between the compressor housing and the center section. The rebuild kit came with an o-ring for this but the problem was that the housing wouldnt seat far enough on the center section to allow the large snap ring to fall into place. My question, is the o-ring necessary? or is it only used on certain turbos? As of now the turbo was put back together without the o-ring and works fine.
Thanks

The o-ring seals the compressor housing. You have a boost leak now. If the old o-ring isn't torn try using it, it is compressed and will fit easier.

there wasnt an o-ring when I took it apart. the housing fits nice and tight without it so there cant be too much of a leak, i would think.

OK. I would suggest calling HTT and asking their opinion. They've taken apart a few more turbos than I have.

My 95 HX35 does not have an o-ring. My old H1C does have an o-ring.
The HX35 does not leak, at least I don't hear anything or see a pressure loss.
