Cold Weather - Help

It has been a long time since I've been on but think I need some advice.

There is a fairly good chance that I am going to be moving to North Dakota. While I want to take my Dodge with me I am afraid that the cold weather farther north will not be worth it.

I currently live in Colorado and my truck is usually OK in temps above 20 farenheit. Anything much colder than that and it is very rough to start. I have never had it not start but it takes some encouragement: some "choking", a lot of white (and grey) smoke, a little throttle play but it always rumbles to life.

I have redone my fuel lines and while I know they used to leak I thought I cured that problem. I have also checked my intake heaters and I am getting full voltage to them.

Anyone have any experience from way up north to pass along? I am not really wanting to give up my Cummins but if it makes life easier I may pass it off for a smaller gasser.

Thanks for any advice.

I live in Saskatchewan and it gets cold here -40 in the winter. The only thing i ever did is make sure the block heater is working. I have never had a issue with the truck not starting in the winter. The power steering pump has a little bit of a growel when you start it up. Just let it warm up a bit before you start driving.Just drive slow when you get going. It takes awhile to warm up

same, it gets pretty darn cold here in ontario too, i find a good set of batteries, and a working block heater are a must have, once it gets below -35c here i usually leave it plugged in all night, but a good timer setup would work well too,( have it set to come on a few hours before you head out). also like diesel demon said, be shure to let it warm up before driving when it gets really cold, and I have never had a problem starting my 94 12 valve in the cold, infact it usually starts faster than alot of gassers i know, lol.

good batteries. plug the block heater in. and use fuel additive. you can change your power steering fluid to a better synthetic. start it. let oil pressure climb can take alittle longer being cold. and when you first drive take it easy on the go peddle.

Another thing, make sure your Grid heaters are working, I think many of us have GH's that are only working partially.

I added LEDs to positively tell when my GH's were on, less than a year later, one of my two solenoids is not functioning.

That and good batteries are a good start.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Things may be changing and I might be staying in Colorado. I still need to figure out my cold starting problem (acts like it is losing prime) but it is not as urgent as it was yesterday.
