Cold engine dies when transmission shifted from park to drive or reverse

When my truck has sat overnight and I fire it up for the first time in the morning, it will start and run just fine. But, when I place it in gear, either drive or reverse (it's an automatic), the engine dies. I could simulate this with a manual if I had my foot on the brake and shifted it into 4th gear. Once the engine and tranny warm up, the engine no longer dies when I put it into gear. Problem began after I had the new torque converter and transmission installed. New torque converter and tranny work well, I'm towing 10,000 lbs up and down the road no sweat. Could this problem be caused by the torque converter being locked on initial start or just being real tight? What other potential causes should I look at? Any one ever experience this one? Thoughts on what it could be? I appreciate any input. Thanks!

Same issue here and it started after my new converter and VB. I attribute it to the tight converter and allow a few more minutes of warm up time. Still kind of annoying but it drives so much better.

Good luck.

At first I thought that a few more minutes warm up time would do the trick, too. Does it work for you? I've noticed that it'll still die when I take off that first time, even after 5 minutes warm up, unless I give it some fuel. It will also die if I keep my foot on the brake and shift it into drive or reverse. It's only after I've driven for a few miles and get the tranny temp up over 100 degrees F. that the problem "goes away". Thoughts?
