My first cool morning with this truck (03) and had an interesting clatter issue. Truck clattered like a diesel this morning until I had gone about 100 feet from the driveway and like a switch was thrown it went as quiet as my wifes gas van. I've never heard it run that quiet. What's up with that? Temp guage had not moved. Is there some anti clatter software in the computer? It happened instantly, for a second I thought it died?? No noise all the way to work??. Neighbors should be happy..

Reminded me of a gas engine with shot lifters that drain out and clatter for a few minutes until oil pressure comes up and they get quiet all of a sudden..

This is typical for our engines on a cold morning. Mine will clatter like an old 12 valver until I just about get out of the neighborhood. Adding a box with timing will also make the clatter worse.

The clatter is normal in cold weather. The "instant" shut off of the clatter sounds a bit peculiar.

I know the clatter is normal, it's that instantly quiet thing that I don't understand?? Maybe a fluke. I'll find out in the morning. That's why I was wondering if there was a knock sensor and maybe the engine changes timing if it senses excessive knock. It was like I hit the clatter threshold this morning. The way it quit it seems like it had to be computer controlled. I thougth maybe this was part of the "quieter diesel" that dodge advertises..

It will clatter when it's cold out and you are under something like 1600 rpm or so. Going higher than that changes the pilot injection and the noise seems to disappear. If you slowed back down it would still clatter until it's warmed up a little.

just wait until you get a really cold morning... it makes lots of noise at -40*°c/f...

From my understanding is the pilot injection is turned off to decrease the warm up time during cold weather. Once the engine temp gets to a certain point the computer turn the pilot injection on.
