CNG System to increase MPG?
I saw this system in Diesel Power magazine (12 truck shoot out). It increased his MPG up to 38MPG (he states he was seeing even better MPG during testing at 70MPH).
What is a CNG system? Where can I get one!

I wrote into them, asking about the CNG set up (compressed Natural Gas). I wanted to see if they'd do a shoot out between CNG, and LPG (propane) and see what the effects where, millage, cost, ect. He said the CNG was around 70 cents a gallon, which is great. I also wanted to see how much CNG he used with the amount of number 2 (don't really care) bette rmillage is millage. Hard part might be finding a place to fill up on CNG (not as easy as LPG) Hopefully I hear back from them, would be VERY interested in this type of set up. (rather do this than a bigger number 2 spare tank)

I read that in Diesel Power also. I can't believe they don't say more about it. These days who wouldn't want to get 38 mpg in their diesel. Hopefully there will be more info on some CNG kits, because I would be very interested in one.

CNG is something that EVERYONE should be pushing for, old T. Boone finally got something right. People in Utah can fill up for less than 60cents/gallon for the gas, and it's going for less than 90cents/gallon in Oklahoma. American has an ABUNDANT supply of natural gas, hundreds of years worth, CNG is one VERY viable alternative energy source!

People in Utah can fill up for less than 60cents/gallon for the gas, and it's going for less than 90cents/gallon in Oklahoma. American has an ABUNDANT supply of natural gas, hundreds of years worth, CNG is one VERY viable alternative energy source!

CNG has a Octane rating @ 140, Propane @ 104.
CNG is harder to compress and required more storage space than Propane.
How many CNG stations to you see?
Gasoline engines can be modified to run on either.
It seems what they are doing is creating a more Flamable mixture and raising the octane rating within the combustion chamber. What woudl prevent this from doing engine damage to a diesel?

I didn't read the artical, but I'm willing to bet he is not figuring in the amount of CNG in the mileage. I do LPG and get better mileage but once I net the LPG in the mileage figure it is about 1/2 - 1 mpg better.

DiezelSmoke is right. I read somewhere in the magazine that they only considered the amount of diesel used. I also think they allowed the contestants to shut off their engines when going down hill to achieve maximum mileage figures. 38 mpg isn't going to happen with an 8,000 lb truck that's as aerodynamic as a house while driving under real highway conditions.

i spoke to jeff on the phone, he lives close to me apparently. He gets around 23 mpg on cng. He averages 60 mpg with the cng. He has ran this truck brand new off the dealer lot and then installed cng on it. Trucks has about 150k+ miles on it. I'll be buying one of his kits here soon, just looking for a cng tank.

Pickens Plan
T. Boone Pickens is the man! Check his ideas out on http:/www.PickensPlan.com and then sign up. LNG/CNG has a hugh potential to reduce our fuel costs. With the new shale extraction process natural gas is one of our best natural resources in the USA. The equivalent per gallon cost at current market prices is around $1.00/gallon. An article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday suggested that the price might even fall due to the hugh supply vs. current demand. The big hurdle is the good old EPA and CARB(in California). Without their approval there will be no OEM approval and therefore any existing warrantees would be voided. Hopefully T. Boone will push for the EPA to back off on retrofitting the turbodiesel fleet.
Also, LNG may prove to be a better option for greater range from a tank of NG.

Is house gas a high enough pressure though? I thought natural gas was regulated down quite a bit going into a home. If you could tap into a 4" main that would be a different story. Dont get any ideas please.

That's the only problem with a home fill-up station, it takes around 8hrs because you must take low pressure gas and compress it to approx. 3000psi.
I agree, Boone Pickens is the man, this is a VERY reasonable energy plan, but like you said, the greenies are gonna shoot it down. America has HUNDREDS of years of gas locked up in the shales, just get the people in office that will let us get it out!!
