Clutch? Which one? (or here we go again)

Ok. I have finally exceeded the capacity of the stock HO clutch. I know that I am going to need to replace it soon. I don't plan to go any higher with the HP, so take a look at he sig and let me know some recommendations on clutches. You guys started this so stick with me here.

Sounds like you are in need of a South Bend Clutch.
I would get one that is rated for about 350hp.

South Bend Clutch 13" Con O

Good for about 400RWHP. So put that SBC in, and feel free to up the power a little bit more, and drive happy.

I agree to the 13" upgrade comment. Especially if you tow over 8,000lbs regularly.

Check out www.southbendclutch.com and you will see thats the first thing Peter says on his site before you can even get to the clutchs.

Yep, definitely the 13" Con O. Great clutch for the tow crowd as its as smooth as stock with a light pedal pressure.

Re:Clutch? Which one? (or here we go again)

According to my 1/4 mile times I'm running 480 to nearly 500RWHP, according to the dyno, no less than 456.9RWHP.

Going through a abused, old Con OFE. Can chatter when backing a HEAVY trailer (I gross out at 40,000 pounds, and can really load a clutch) Daily driving the clutch is smooth as stock. Light pedal. Holds on tight to WOT .

With my 450-500RWHP truck, I have done a few torture tests experimenting with stuff, but the test the never ceases to amaze me, is, going from 1,000RPM in 6th gear, and WOT, running all the way through the powerband to 3,200RPM. Not a slip.

If you plan on staying under 400RWHP, go for Con O, it's cheaper, and wil be even more driveable, but if you ever plan on putting some more power to it, the OFE would be the "buy it once" choice.

My $.02

Here is a copy of an email exchange. Does this sound right?

Subject: Clutch

I live in Switzerland County IN and have a Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins ISB. It is the HO with the 6-speed. I have the Edge EZ box installed along with the Bosch 275 injectors. I have the EGT issue under control with a 4” exhaust and gauges. I can slip the clutch at will with only slight throttle pressure so I need to do something real soon. I do very little towing and when I do, it’s usually less than 6000 lbs. I would like to get a recommendation on a South Bend Clutch and a quote including installation. I’m not sure if you do installations. If not can you recommend someone in SE IN to do the job?

Reply:

Sorry for the delay in response, the best South Bend clutch for your truck would probably be the MU 1947 Con OFE. The clutch itself is 907+IN Sales Tax and labor would be either $250.00 for 2wd or $300.00 for 4wd.

Thanks

Sounds about right for the install prices .... EEP quoted me $450 Labor for installing their pulling clutch and $570 for R&R the whole tranny including the 5th gear nut. I don't keep track of clutch prices, but I'm sure they're somewhat inline.

Re:Clutch? Which one? (or here we go again)

Rattle Rattle,
I just installed a SBC in my rig. In the break-in process now. The only pain I had doing it myself was removing and then installing the cross member. I beat it out with a 3 lb. dead blow hammer and a 2 ft. pry bar. Installed it just with the pry bar. If your flywheel was like mine ( hot spots ) It's best to just replace it. If you do replace it, go through Cummins just less than $300.00 as apposed to Dodgeat $737.00. SBC is the way to go !!

Oh boy here we go again, the South Bend Cutch Salesmen hard at work....... Pay three times more for a clutch then you need to....... But Peter is such a good guy though.......
Whatever..

Research it yourself and make a decision based on applied pressure, surface area and material type.

Zino not everyone wants to build or design their own clutch.
Im not sure what the sarcasum (SP?) is for but SBC sells the best line of clutches for the Dodge Cummins trucks IMO.

Rattle Rattle have you made a decision yet??

Re:Clutch? Which one? (or here we go again)

Stock with just the right amount milled off of the pressure plate mounting tabs and a bit of material added to the top of them. ( Think a bit about it before you ask, you'll figure it out).

When I need more holding power I will work with the same companies that provide clutches for my other addiction... Drag racing. Companies like McCleod, Ram etc. Just because they don’t have a listing in a catalog doesn’t mean they wont put you together a combination that’s more than adequate. Haven’t run a four speed in my drag car for years, (yes, I am a powerglide nut now) but when I did, I always found these companies will work with you. There are guys running Hemi-Cuda's making 1,200 HP and 800 Ft*Lbs, dumping the clutch at 7,000 RPM all season long, with a single disk.

In my opinion the setup for most of our trucks would be a twin disk clutch with minimal iron content. Keep it organic to keep it from being chattery and grabby and keep the applied force down to ease the strain on your calf, but up the surface area. Gets you a double bang for your buck.... More surface area for more torque transfer, and more surface area for better heat dissipation.
For the record, as recent as 4 months ago I thought for sure I was going to have a SBC in my truck.

To avoid the torrent of nasty grams and threats of legal action from some companies, I will state that all of the above as well as my previous posts are my opinion and only my opinion and not necessary the opinion of this forum, its administrator or any other individual for that matter.
