Stupid truck....My truck didn't slip the clutch during the dyno, but it does slip in 5th gear when a hammer on it.Don't think the 5th gear would slip.Where do you guys think I should get a clutch from??

Well I have my favourites.. [whistle] PEAK (http://www.peakdieselperformance.com) or PDR (http://www.pdrdiesel.com)would be my selections.

The prices I saw at PEAK are down about $150 from when I got mine. Good time to buy really.

5th gear slip is the first sign, just take it easy Dave! LOL..

A 5th gear could slip????I didn't know that...I know when I go into 5th,I do feel a little loose drive train knock....:(

Thats the gear you will notice the clutch slip first. Thats how mine started.

I think we are OK....They are all South Bend clutchs...

Dave, I am not communicating properly. The gear doesn't slip. Its the clutch only. Its just that in 5th gear you are multiplying the output torque with OD ratio and its a harder pull on the clutch.. Gears don't slip.. ;)

There are other vendors for clutches, they are just not an approved vendor here and are not endorsed or even allowed by the DTR. There are many other forums to discuss Valiar, just not here. VanHaisely, or other are also discussed here, just not the V word. [nonono]

And here I thought I was loosing my mind....Gears slipping[duhhh]...Until I get my paws inside the tranny, then I will know....Rebuilt other standard trans but never a a 5-speed......Looks like another wasted summer building the dodge...[dummy]

Is the gearbox giving you trouble too?

Diesel Dave2
03-18-2008, 12:16 PM
I don't know if its the rear end or the transmission...I could tell the old girl is getting loose when I shift gears.....I should look into doing a complete overhaul on the transmission also.Don't think I will overhaul this transmission on the kitchen table like the super T-10 4-speed I did a few years back..[laugh]

Lil Dog

Parts are pretty readily available for the NV4500. I would think if you can do a T-10, this one is just heavier.

Dave,
You should just sell your truck and buy mine! (needs nothing) It's ready for whatever you want to throw at it. LOL.

Do what Andy says. I'll take your truck then, and I'll deal with the drivetrain issues. I'll give you $500 when I get home.

Even though its pretty cliche to push SB here, I have been happy with mine. That said, Valair has a good following and I haven't heard of any real complaints from them. Are you just looking for a good single disc, or are you gonna step up to a dual? Like Jason said, look to Peak or PDR. Personally, I'd go to Peak first, since that is where the guru's are at. Which reminds me, I need to call them.

If you're gonna overhaul your tranny, I'd personally look for a 98-03 top cover for it. You get the better shifter design, much tighter feel. I never really liked the way the 94-97 trannies shifted. JMO.

Didn't know there was a difference. Hmm..

Shift tower is part of the cover on the old ones, newer ones it bolts on. You can get a short shift kit for the newer ones, and its a much tighter feel.

I was thinking of the SB that is rated for 550HP/1100 FT.Its a little over kill because I don't think I will get to 550HP.I don't want to be like Mikey(Automatic transmission test pilot) and start breaking things.[laugh].I have to call peak and find out what the difference is between Con O,FE and OFE.I don't think I need a dual setup.353HP is enough to get me into trouble. But would be nice to break the 400HP mark or break something else...

Now the big question....where do you get one??

Lil Dog

I don't regret getting the FE. I was the same, why just get enough? I tow a good sized RV and didn't want to do it twice.

Prefect timing to tryout the new twins? New injectors. Get good stuff and we will help you on breaking it in. I think Dynomite has a deal on their tweaked injection pumps. I liked to see you smokeout your first vette with the girl. Tate would be dropping in air bags and fat weenies on the girl, if he buy the truck. Someone should just buy his ranger off him and show him how to buy a race truck.[dummy] You supply the beer Dave, I'm into giving you a hand. The next garage party at your place.

Dave if your are looking at an FE....consider throwing the extra 500 bucks in and getting a low rated DD.....I had the FE and thought it was OK, then she slipped on me and I went too a BIG DD.....and too be honest, I was pretty choked that I didn't go too a DD in the first place....I have the SPEC that has the 4200# pressure plate and quite honestly feel it is as driveable as the FE was.....so if you were too go with a 3250# DD, then I think you would be much happier with it.

Unless Dave is going to twins and all out new fuel pump, a DD may be a little more than required. Based on his HP goals, the FE is a safety factor on what is really needed (OFE).

If was to do it over I would sell hp parts and go back to a ofe, I am not liking my DD sprung 3600 much for daily driving it rattles bad wit the clutch in and it is tough to get in 1st and reverse from a dead stop without hitting another gear first. BUT....... when you load the thing up in 3rd and let it loose......WOW[guitar] it is very hard to keep you hands on the wheel.Hence why I am still loooking for a guy with a 01 auto to switch with either a built auto or plain we can switch cash with the deal.Keep wifey happy.

how ever if I a guy must run a clutch make it a south bend Peter is EXCELLENT!

I just wanted Dave smile for abit about smoken a vette with the veggie fry smell. It will make you feel better about smoking a clutch and pulling wrenchs for a while. Its too sweet of a ride to give up on yet bud as it was one of coolest looking rides at the last DTR met.

I would run the DD injection pump and use the big nasty smoken DD sticks. I have the hot rod diesel pulsing in my blood and its hard for me not to convince others to following along on my path.[dummy]

If I only knew a year ago,I would of went with a dragonfly pump instead of a stock 175 rebuilt pump.At the time a higher perforamce pump was $2000 plus. The difference was only about $300. now for a dragonfly pump:(But with the lasercuts in the 175 and the plate all the way forward,it seems to flow way more fuel . For now I may leave it at 335HP and go to 450HP later.I'm finding the drive tran is getting lose and a overhaul of the engine rear seal, transmission overhaul kit and new flywheel and clutch needs to be done.I have to start ordering this stuff soon....Looks like its going to be a expensive overhaul, but thats life...[laugh]

Mike Holmen

You could just pull out the laser cuts, slipping clutch would stop slipping. My front end is toast. I omitted to myself that I have to buy new tires anyways, so why worry about it. I think I might need new rotors too. I'm thinking about upgrading to 3 gen brakes and go all out on the suppension. If I can't win at the dyno I might try to at least pretend that I drive a cool ride. I have friends that can't believe that there are diesels as noisy as my truck. One day there will only have a few trucks that clank tee clank at our mets.

I am too! [laugh] But you aren't beating it up so you won't have any issues. They report the stock clutch can take 750 ft-lbs, but i have never seen that happen.
