Clicking in Fuse panel/drivers compartment

2001 2500 w/cummins 5 spd manual transmission

I don't notice it so much in 1 - 4 gears, but when heading down the highway in 5th I can hear a clicking near the fuse panel. It sounds like an electical switch opening and closing. It is not steady either it is random. Has anyone else experienced this or know what it might be. This is my first Diesel so if this is a standard thing just let me know. Thanks

Welcome to DTR -

-if you haven't any unusual electrical "issues", you may have something loose or broken in or behind the fuse panel, have you done a complete feel-around in there?

No I really havn't dug in yet. I have only had the truck 3 weeks or so. I have cracked open the fuse panel and everything seems to look in order at first glance. I just wasn't sure if there was something there that was normal and I just didn't know it. Anything specific I should look for since it is only at traveling in 5th gear? Thanks

I checked today to see if I could see anything out of the ordinary. I didn't see anything. If anyone has an idea as to what this might be. I tested it today. I heard it again when it got around operating temp and it happened in 3rd gear as well...not so much when I was coasting but more when going on an even or steeper grade. Any clues?

Thanks

I chased the same thing for several months. No operating issues and never found it. I finally got used to the sound, now I hear it again.....thanks.

I may be totally off base since I don't know these trucks well. Had something similar in a rental car one time and at night even saw a slight spark. I paid attention and it turned out to be the A/C relay.

Try applying pressure to the steering wheel (up, down, side to side) when this noise is occuring. Alot of times there is a steering column "click" noise that make your described sound. My 01 does it.

x2.. mine makes the same noise, it REALLY sounds like a relay, but it's only prevalent on bumps...

Chalked it up to steering column noise.

I have had that problem on my 02. I found it was doing it when i'd have the radio volume up. I ended up taking the fuse panel cover out and the noise stopped, I put it back it and the noise came back. My fix was putting some thick tape on a few spots inside the cover and the noise it now gone.
