Cleaning a turbo

I need to clean up the center section of a turbo for painting but I don't want to dissasemble the shaft. Any thoughts on what I could use or maybe soak it in.

Jay

Re:Cleaning a turbo

I am assuming you are talking about the compressor side of the turbo...Two products you can use, is carburator cleaner, or electric motor cleaner, found at most any parts stores. Either one will clean off oil and grease, and also "ok" for cleaning the inside of the compressor & exhaust side of the turbo. If you are trying to paint the exhaust side of the turbo, you best leave it alone, as the highest over the counter heat paint is 1500*.

Steve

Re:Cleaning a turbo

Hey Steve- I meant the center section (the thingy that holds the shaft & bearings ) I was concrned about using the wrong product that might hurt the bearings, o-rings and such. I finally just used some break cleaner and then re-oiled the bearings. Seemed to work. As for the compressor housing, foaming engine cleaner works real well.

Jay
