clatters under heavy throttle

Buddy brought by the house this morning a 99 24v auto that is stock with 184k miles on the clock that he is looking to purchase. I took it for a little drive and noticed that it runs out smooth even at highway speeds but once we out on the highway and wound her up to around 3k then pressed the go pedal all the way down that it would clatter but back off jsut a bit and it would return to the normal engine sound. It did this a number of times and only when I pressed all the way down, sounded kind of like the timing was advanced or there was air in the lines (clattering hammering sound). There was no smoke at anytime either while the clattering was happening or anytime for a matter of a fact (stock).

Wonder if the valve lash has been adjusted yet? Should be done @ 150k miles if I remember correctly.

Probably valve lash. Have you checked the engine to make sure he isn't looking at a 53 block? The 53 blocks were common in 99.

This did not sound like or act like valve lash it was throttle dependent because I was still gaining even though I backed off the go pedal just a bit - it was just shove it to the carpet and bingo it chattered but off just a hair and it would stop - was still accellerating the entire time.

I warned him about the 53 block and brought him in here and pulled up pictures of the damage and where to look for it - he didn't seem worried or concerned - his response was if it hasn't failed at 184k then it probably wouldn't...

My thought is maybe it's starving for fuel under complete WOT but just under the lift pump can supply enough fuel???
