Thumbs down Chrome Problems On Aftermarket Rims

I hate the chrome on my Helo Max 8s. already had 2 replaced and there pitting just like the others. The truck doesnt get drivin in the winter and i clean them all the time and use spray wax but they keep getting worse. I had a 03 Harley Davidson ford with factory chromed aluminum wheels and never had a problem. same goes for my Parents 04 gmc with factory chromed 20's. The chrome just looks really thin on my helos and i dunno if thats the problem or if theres something in the factory brake pads that covers them in dark red dust withing 50 miles of being cleaned. I owned a set of max 6's on a jeep for 5 years and never had any problems with them, and i didnt take nearly as good care of them either

Weld supposedly has the best chrome out there. 3 year warranty. I have two friends with chrome welds that are flaking, discolored, and pitted. Get an aluminum or black finish and be done with chrome.

I stopped buying chrome rims long time ago, pitting or cracks. Aluminum is the way to go for an aftermarket wheel.

I had the same problem with my chrome wheels. so I sent the first set in and they sent me a new set and then the second set did the same thing not a few months later. so I called them up and they told me that I live too close to salt water. I am just as far away from it as the wheel place is, and none of my friends wheels are doing this. So I just sold the chrome and got all black wheels which is soooooo much easier to keep clean. My wheels where Diamo brand, so dont get those in chrome. I was dealing with wheel pros. and I dont think I will deal with them again.

I've had mine for 2 yrs now with no issues. In fact I just recommended them to someone. As long as they're kept clean and polished... they look like they did new.

sorry to here yours haven't held up.

I agree, but nothing's perfect. My Weld Cheyenne 8's (Kore Welds) started pitting in less than a year. I was able to keep them looking good with chrome polish and one of those foam ***** you put on a drill. Up close, you could still see the pitting. I eventually sold them and went to H2's instead. They have a more ideal offset anyway.

I had the helo 8 chrome on my 05 and they always looked beutiful.
I had a set of weld cheyenne alum at first and hated them as they looked like crap even after a good motherball polish. I sold these to my buddy, whom never polishes them and at this point he would have been better off just keeping his stock wheels.
I have no problem with chrome and would love to have another set of helo 8's on my 07 (I'm leaving this truck bone stock).

I too had similar problems with my chrome MKW's, would try and keep them clean, wax them quite often, but they seemed to pit and tarnish too easily. I finally traded them to a guy through "craigslist" in Portland for a black wheels. Where I'm from they salt the roads quite a bit during the winter, seems like a lot of these wheels were made for Arizona and Cali climates.

Yeah I got Helo Cores with the same problems. Too many gravel roads, been deep in some mud a couple of times, etc. I will not be going with chrome again.

I know I polished mine every time I washed my truck, so at least once a week and they still went to crap so you will never see me with chrome wheels again or aluminum because alum you have to polish all the time to keep them up. But the black is the way to go.

Hey Hillbilly,
My wife has Maxx 8's on her truck and their about 1.5 yrs old and there starting to pit pretty bad. She takes great care of her truck and I take her wheels off in the winter and I put her stockers back with the studded snows. The caps are absolute freakin junk and the wheels aren't that much better. I hope there warranty is better then there wheels. I guess I'll find out.

I've had no problems out of my XD badlands. Chrome is much easier to clean then polished aluminum. You just have to stay on top of them or they will be junk in two years. You can't let chrome go and bring it back to life like you can raw aluminum.
