Christmas Gift??

I overheard Dutch talking to a fella today and he mentioned he was going to get a scan tool that checks the codes for our 96 dually. Hmmm, that might make an excellent Christmas present. I know it's very last minute but any ideas on where I might buy one?
Merry Christmas, Diana

Depends on if he wants a specific brand/model, there's a lot to choose from out there. If you can extract more information from him that will narrow down your selection DRASTICALLY. This late in the game ebay and other online places are probably out of the question, shipping would take to long, so that's going to make it harder to get a good deal. I know Harbor Freight carries a couple different models, a friend has their super cheapo one and it works great for him! Also most auto parts stores should have one to sell you, they typically have the same super cheap model but also have some more expensive ones that give a bit more in depth information on the codes.

Either way sounds like a nice gift! hope you can get your hands on a good one!

Thumbs up Code Scanners

COOL gift idea....
I know you can even get a fairly good one from Walmart.... and they are EVERYWHERE.... However, I saw one that even claimed to access the ABS system at Advanced Auto Parts. I dont know where all they are located though.

There are but not very many. You can check them without a scanner by following the instructions here http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/trouble..._DTC_codes.htm

On '96 and older most of the scanners on the market for Chrysler vehicles are useless.
Chrysler didn't use the common OBD II codes until '97. Before they used their own codes called DRB. The scanner for DRB codes is patented by Chrysler and goes for several thousand dollars.
