Just bought a new QH a few weeks ago. Kid-broke 6 y/o, 16h, with Blondie's Dude, Sonny Dee Bar, and Wimpy one step off his papers . Horses are unbelievably cheap here in 'Bama, I paid $1100 for him. We also have 2 mules, TWH mare with foal, 5-gaited pony, Bud the Dog Hatin' Donkey, an App mare bred to a son of Texas Red (world champ Mammoth Jack) and a 2300lb Belgian mare. Needless to say we like all breeds.

Dang. That's dirt cheap. We payed $6500 for a run down 6 year old training mare. 14.2 hands high and the temper of a witch. Wouldn't you know that she was the best dang little horse you could ever want. I beat fully trained trail horses with her and we never worked trail. Won numerous high points and even a buckle with her before we retired her. Now she lives life producing awesome babies. I love that little roan.

Same here, I've seen lots of papered horses sell for less than $800. Gentle riding grade stock in the $200-$300 range all day long. BTW the QH I bought included a saddle worth about $300.

I was in Murray KY a few weeks ago at Kelso's Mule Fest. Had a great time. If you are ever looking for some HIGH quality mule stock, check out kelsomules.com. Great people to deal with. Johnny told me they sell about 400 mules per year.

Hey Bigblue, this gelding I bought is sooo easy going we put the neighbor's kid (8 y/o, knows nothing about horses) on him and she rode the entire neighborhood for about 2 hours by herself. I've ridden gaited horse that are rougher than his jog.

Bgood, I've hunted all over the country for those bloodlines in a Mare paint or QH, you got a lucky buy there. Keep me in mind next time.

He's a gelding but I still feel I got a pretty good deal. I met the owner at the local horse sale, he no-sale'd at $600 , can't blame him there. I didn't even bid because I knew ahead of time what it would take to buy him. My 10 y/o wanted him instead of his App mare because "Real cowboys ride Quarter Horses".

That is one awesomely bred horse. Congrats!... I like the Blondies Dude lines... good heads on 'em...

"Real cowboys ride Quarter Horses".
Well, most of'em do!!! Although I've always said theres nothing wrong with an Appy.....a little salt and Teryaki Sauce and they can be real good!!!

I can sell a good kid-broke, well- bred QH in that age range for between $1000 and $3000 around here. Grade horses go for dirt, ya can get one at some of the local auctions for under $150. Of course those are the ones ya never know how sound they truely are or what problems they may have.
The best price I ever got for a horse was a 13 yr old Stallion that was 50% Two Eyed Jack-same as a own son- and we got over $10K for him. I havent sold one yet for less than $2500, so I feel I am doing good.
We now just keep a few brood mares and breed to outside stallions, sell the babes..... more money with less overhead in it that way. I ve got one on the place now that we are asking $4000 for , it will go up after she gets started under saddle this spring.
I'm not into the mules, worked with 'em in the past, but havent owned any. I've heard of Kelso's though, pretty big affair isnt it?

One of my neighbors owns circle-s-quarter-horses.com. Wesley and Candy are great people, last time I was out there they had 80+ head with 5 really nice stallions.

The "Real cowboys..." comment was made by my 10 y/o son. I have never really been a big App fan but this mare is probably the most intelligent and athletic horse I have ridden, great fun. BTW she is an "Indian Shuffler" and can really get down the trail, most QH riders I ride with need to trot all day to keep up. Mules and Apps are similar...only two kinds- good and BAAADDD.

Ive ridden mules, much smoother gait but generaly slower paced..
I know several Appys used for Mounted Law Enforcement Duties , they can be good solid horses...

This is my old pony...............

Hmmm...didn't come out real clear, but you get the idea. YELLOW FEVER was the Champ of the blood line, and a little TWO EYED JACK don't hurt.
