Checking Motor Oil levels with Leveling kit

Will a leveling kit change or affect the level on the dipstick? Common sense tells me it will affect it. Should I still aim for the full mark during oil changes?

Thanks Jamie

I know on my last two vehicles, when parked in my garage, which was slightly uphill, the level shown on the dipstick was slightly less than the actual level on flat ground. I don't have that garage anymore and haven't tested the truck to see how it responds to grades. You might want to try parking on a slight grade if it's feasible and checking and then on flat. I'm guessing that the leveling kit will be similar to a slight grade.

Disclaimer - I haven't installed one yet, so....

I think the leveling kit only affects the way the cab/body sits on the frame. The engine is still mounted in the frame, which shouldn't have it's geometry changed.

If that's the case, then oil level should be unaffected.

Joel I was thinking/wondering the same thing, but I don't think the leveling kit is just a body lift is it? I thought it effectively raised the entire vehicle height but I could be wrong, I haven't really examined those kits yet.

Yes it does raise the whole vehicle, that is why you have coil spring spacers and aftermarket leveling springs not body lifts and spacers. cumminsboy

The way I understand, and have seen leveling kits, is they are usually just blocks put on top of the coil over springs to lift the front end a couple of inches.

The small change in level angle on the motor should not affect much. There is a good safety cushion on the calibration so you wont run dry or whip up the oil. I would not worry about small level changes. If you want to get precice on level accuracy, when you change oil, count the quarts as you fill it, when you get the capacity in, pull the dipstick and check the level marks. If there is error, take a jewelers file and scribe the new level on the stick as the calibrated full mark.

OK

thanks

Jamie

PS spacers lift entire front of truck... I just got done putting two washers on top mounting screws of front headlights to lower them a little... I was getting highbeamed A LOT.

Good point, whats the story with the headlights for guys that lift or level their trucks? Are they not adjustable?

It aint rocket science guys. A quart either way isn't going to kill it.

Lightman,

I only have 2" leveling kit and BFG 315s and my head lights definitely cause oncoming drivers to blink high beams at me quite a bit. I can really iritate ricers when I am behind them at night. This is a good thing sometimes.

I have read the DR manual on how to adjust the headlights. I read it over and over and I still am not sure if there is a way to adjust them effectively.

With the fog lights on, I love the way I light the road up at night. So for now they will stay this way.

I wouldn't worry. I always put a little less oil in. I like it about 1/8 of an inch below the full mark. Do the same with my big truck, never had any problems.
