Check Your OEM Foglights!

Went out yesterday to go run an errand, and found my foglight on the drivers side hanging by the wiring! The lamp itself was fine, but the plastic housing around the lamp had broken on both sides of where you bolt it to the bumper. You could tell that on one side, it had been broken for awhile, as it was covered in dust, and the other side was not, the plastic on the break looked clean. As I couldn't stand the look of the truck with just one foglight, I went to the dealer to see if I could just buy one light. You sure can, and it cost $140 for just one light! About a year and a half ago, I bought the whole assembly, two lights, the wiring harness, and the push button switch for that price! Needless to say, I kept the old lamp, and will make a trip to the junkyard to see if I can find a third gen. Ram with foglights. I don't need the lamp, as my old one will be my spare, I just want to get ahold of the plastic housing that holds the lamp and mounts it to the bumper. I also looked around online for just one OEM light, and the cheapest I found was about $90. And then I would have had to wait for it to ship. I needed the light now, so I had to pay the price. Just a word of advice, check your foglight mounting areas for cracks or breaks. Sorry for the long rant, just mad that I paid $140 for a foglight!

There's no way I would pay that much for one lamp housing. Temporarily, you could have glued or duct taped the lamp back in place. Then buy another lamp housing.

You could also use products like JB Weld to make a new ear.

Yes, for a temp. fix, I could have tried that, but I wanted to fix it right the first time. I think the whole housing aroung the lamp should be made of something different than plastic, or at least the area that bolts to the bumper itself. Even the parts guy at the dealership said he has had several people come in with the same story. He even told me that if I had still been under my warranty, he would have replaced it, and he did ask if i was still under warranty. But my warranty is long since gone. He just didn't know I added those lights about a year and a half ago. And I like the way my foglights work when my highbeams are on!

Just a note- the foglight lenses on the 3rd gen trucks are glass. I have replaced many of them on many trucks after being broken by rocks. On replacement I always cover the lens with that clear plastic film you can buy. I have never had to replace a foglamp that's had this stuff put on. It's well worth it.

Yes!!! That stuff does work. Sorry that I can't think of the website that sells that film! I do have it on my truck, and my '08 Charger. It does work. But I'm talking about the whole plastic housing that holds and mounts the lamp to the bumper. My lamp was just fine, it still worked. It was just hanging by the wires. What I'm trying to say is that I couldn't find any place to sell me just the mounting housing that goes around the lamp itself. Everywhere I looked, you had to buy the lamp with the plastic housing. That's all I needed, the housing around the lamp. I kept the old lamp, which is still good, but in the future, I'll try a junk yard for the housing around the lamp. The plastic housing can be changed out, but nobody sells just that. You gotta buy the whole dang light! Just trying to pass on my lesson learned about my experience.

Next time buy the whole kit again for the price of one light. That will atleast give you the entire assembly for the side your not using to have as a back up as well as all the other parts. Or you could always sell those to someone else in need of some parts and get some of your money back. Just a thought.

I thought of that too, but the price of the entire kit went way up also.Way over the price I paid a couple 0f years ago. At least at the dealer I went to. Again, all I'm tryng to do is let you guys know that you might have an issue with your foglights. I'm not happy at the money I had too spend, but then again, like I said before, I like the way my light setup is, and will keep on truckin

not to hijack the thread....but I just went on that site listed above and why is the driver side fog light more expensive than the passenger light?

My lights have been cracked since my truck had 10 miles on it, and it's not rocks because my truck has had a ranchhand replacement bumper with screen covers. They crack because they get extremely hot and if they get wet they crack

Don't know; when I checked on their prices I was going to look around for just a lens. They gave it to me w/ free shipping. Sounds like they're a little flexible w/ prices/shipping. First time I've used this company. Haven't installed it yet. I know the two foglights are not inter-changable.

Ok guys, here's a pic of what happened to my light. The lamp is just fine. It still works. It will become my spare for when a rock or what ever eventually does destroy a lamp. It's the plastic housing around the lamp that mounts to the bumper, and it can be seperated from the lamp. But nobody just sells just that part. You have to buy the whole lamp and housing/mount as one. That's why when I get a chance to get to a junkyard that has a third gen. Dodge with foglights, I could care less about the lamp working or not, I just need the mount around the light. The parts guy at the dealership said he has sold several foglights for this very same reason. The plastic develops hairline cracks, and eventually the vibration causes one side to fail and snap off. Then it's just a matter of time before the other side snaps. The parts guy was cool in that he asked me if I was still under warranty, but I have long since been out of warranty. You guys just might want to take a peek at your lights, and look for any cracks near where you fasten it to your bumper.
