Check yoke on your 4X4

Had an oil leak at the rear of the transfer case where the driveshaft yoke is. The dealer replaced the seal and it still leaked. After consulting the company, they were told it was probably the yoke leaking instead of the seal. There is a plug in the rear/center of the yoke similar to a freeze plug. Sure enough the plug was what was leaking. Dodge was already aware of the problem and had a replacement yoke sent which fixed the leak. I assume there will be a TSB out on this but have not heard of one yet.

Re:Check yoke on your 4X4

Should any fluid come out? Mine is slinging just a small amount up on the bottom of the cab. Looks like it is coming from the rear side of the harmonic balancer on the front yoke. Best I can tell looks like it is from the rubber between the yoke and the balancer. Does this sound like your problem?

thanks

Gary

Re:Check yoke on your 4X4

There should be no fluid what so ever coming out. 90-93 AWD Eclipses and Talons had a recall for the very issue. The end of the drive shaft (yoke) was leaking a small amount of fluid which would sling up under the car.

Some of the xfer cases dried up enough before it came public to the point where the xfer case would lock up and seize causing loss of control of the vechicle killing serveral folks. A nation wide recall was issued to have owners come in to have the xfer case checked and or replaced and refilled.

Definately something to keep an eye out for. If you see any fluid around the xfer case or underbody near the xfer case take it in and have it looked at.
