check engine light

OK i have read on this forum and multiple others that is i disconnect the battery and hold the break or the horn it will clear my codes in my truck? i have never been able to do that... the check engine light is on in my truck and there are no codes when i do that key trick, do i really have to buy a scanner or a smarty to clear this? why does disconnecting the battery not work?

removing the cables and pressing the brake? really lol

remove the cables ALL FOR OF THEM. go to the passenger side and touch positive and negative cables together then do same on drivers side. then reconnect all cables. it discharges the capacitors in the ECM.

to answer your question- just disconnecting the batter is not going to clear the codes unless you leave them disconnected for several minutes. if you do the above procedure and still have a check engine light, you have an issue that is a hard failure and you need to get it checked out.

where do you live anyways? if you are close to me, i have a scanner and can check this to help ya out

Go to your local AutoZone and have them plug in the code scanner to actually check for codes. Then have them clear the codes if there are any, if that dosen't reset the light then pay, pay , pay threw the nose and go to your local Ram truck dealer and have them check it out.

I am in Los Gatos and am going through the same stuff on my 06 exept my truck wont start. I got a buddie who is a ex Chrysler Mech and knows these trucks pretty well. I believe he is bringing over a scanner tommorow.PM me and Ill give ya my number mabey we can help. My codes have thrown kind of sporadically I like the idea of pulling all four cables as well but according to my buddy hitting the brakes with the terminals disconnected makes the tailights draw down the stored power in the ECU or you can just leave your hood open and the inspection light will drain it. The first time I did it cleared all codes but the check engine remained. The second time It threw 3 codes One saying it did not recognise sentry key code one sayin powerdown resulted in dataloss(essentially wiping the ecu history and clearing codes) and I think the third is my problem in that no voltage drop @ intake air heater I assume its not cycling hence the truck turning over but not firing.Sorry for the hijack but I will help out if possible. The only thing that concerns me is that messing with reseting ECU has resulted in Sentry key code complications that only the dealer will be able to fix. Any Ideas, fixes,or precautions ? Thanx Phil
