Changing tranny fluid

I am going to change the tranny fluid in my wifes suburban. I would like to completely drain the torque converter and go back with all systhetic fluids. Anyone know how to drain the torque converter or will the residule in the TQ affect the synthetic fluid if I can't drain it? Don't have much experience with autos.

Re:Changing tranny fluid

Can't help with a chevy, but on my old Ford C6, there was a "window" at the bottom of the bell housing that you removed to permit access to the torque converter. Then you had to bump the starter or use a breaker bar to rotate the engine to bring the TC drain plug into view. Pull the plug and drain the TC. Button everything up and fill with new stuff.

Hope this helps.

Re:Changing tranny fluid

You have to pull the tourqe converter out to get the oil out. Well that is the only way I know. The other option I believe is to have it flushed then put in new oil. I guess you could also drain the pan fill it and run it and drain it again. I'm not sure if you can mix the two oils though. If you haven't done it I recomend putting a drain plug on the tranny pan, it makes draining it much easier.
Scooter

Re:Changing tranny fluid

Can't promise that this is true or not but when we take the company trucks to the local quick change place they always try to get you to do more than the basic service. One of the things they have promoted is transmission service where they vaccum the trans fluid out and they say the advantage they offer over just dropping the pan is that they also get the fluid out of the TC. This is just something that was advertised to me. You could investigat to see if this is true or not but it seems like a simple method to solve the problem of a complete fluid change.

Re:Changing tranny fluid

Bkay, you could do 1 of 2 things to ensure a complete drain.

The first is a little time consuming, unless your converter has a drain plug, then you have to drill a hole in it and tap it for a pipe plug.

The second is usually what I do. After dropping the pan and changing the filter, install the pan and dump in 5 qts. of fluid. Take off your return line at the trans. This will ensure you have pumped all old fluid out of the cooler also. Have a second person start the truck in N (unless someone worked your v-body your trans does not pump fluid in P), as the truck is running get them to watch the fluid coming out of the return line as you are dumping a few more quarts down the fill tube. When your partner sees the fluid change color shut the truck off and reconnect the trans line. Start back up run through the gears and check level. Your Done
Rick

Hay the drilling of the converter is what we always did you drill it an tap it for a 1/8 pipe plug. Very simple way to do it just besure to drill it from the front of the truck go thru one of the holes in the flywheel at the bottom edge about 1/2 ti 1 inch up.
Bob
