Changing Piston Rings In Truck
Hey guys, I'm looking to change the piston rings in an 07 5.9. I am unable to do it myself due to a broken ankle and being on crutches so i'd like to know if it can be done in the truck? The shop i had look at it says that it is over 30 hours of labor and they have to pull the engine. I heard awhile back that having head studs will ease the removal of the head in the truck? Something like the long headbolts are hard to get out but the studs only stick up a little, so it just lifts out? Also for removing the oil pan i've been reading that by undoing a motor mount and lifting a little, you can get the pan out? so, Which motor mount? I want to be able to give the shop some ideas as they are willing to do it in the truck but dont know how. Thanks in advance.

you don't have to pull the motor. just like doing an inframe on a big rig. yank the head, lift the motor a bit (on ours, not a big rig of course) and drop the pan. not a big deal. if they say they have to yank the motor, go to another shop.
btw- both motor mounts and lift motor a bit to remove pan, remove pan and lowe motor back down onto the mounts.
studs have nothing to do with it. no difference in length to worry about it. back cylinders have a rubber plug on the firewall to remove the bolts.

here is the scoop
they always start out the book times with a single piston
1 piston set 20.6 hours (Includes: Remove Cylinder Top Ridge, Deglaze Cylinder Walls And Clean Carbon)
each additional ring set add .3 hours ( Includes: Remove Cylinder Top Ridge, Deglaze Cylinder Walls And Clean Carbon)
NOTE:
with skid plate add .3 hours
with 4x4 add 1.0 hours
R&R Piston, Pin or Connecting Rod, Add .2 hours (single piston) each additional add .1 hour or .8 hours for all 6 if done at one time
R&R connecting rod add .1 hours for each rod
