Changing fuel filter

Changing fuel filter
I have a 2002 24v turbo diesel and I'm looking for a step by step instruction on how to change the diesel fuel filter. I'm a decent wrench but I'm not terribly familiar with any diesel engines and I want to make sure I do it right.

Use a socket and not a wrench to remove the cap. I think it is 1 1/8. Pull out the old filter, wipe out the cannister and top. Put about new fuel in, about 2/3full, install filter. Replace the O ring and put the top back on. Bump the starter two or three times to fill the cannister and push out air. If it won't fire after cranking awhile you need to crack the #1 injector nut to bleed air. It should fire after that.

The above is about correct. When you unscrew the top, be careful. The filter is attached to the TOP lid. Use a small container or coffee can or bucket to put the filter and lid combo into; that way you don't drip diesel all over. Pop off the the old filter and replace the o-ring. Then snap in the new filter. Slip the lid/filter combo back into the canister and tighten.
Now turn on the key with out starting the motor. You will here the pump spin on to build pressure. It'll only do it for a few seconds. Turn off the key and wait for a good minute or two. Then turn it on agian without starting the motor. Do this five or six times. Then start the motor. Be doing this more then three times (I always do it at least 6 times) you should never have to bleed any fuel lines. At least I never have had too.

Above is also about correct. 15 ways to do the same thing
Below the filter there is a clear drain tube just above the front axle. I use a 1 liter soda pop bottle to catch the fuel, it will wedge on the front axle. I then open the water in fuel separator on the bottom of the filter housing to drain. While draining I unscrew the cap. Pull out filter, wipe out the housing with those blue or red shop towels, no lint, pop off the old filter, pop on the new, replace the o-ring on the cap and tighten it down. Close water in fuel drain. Get my 1/2 full soda jug from below and Bump the starter. Turn the key on and just barely try to engage the starter so it will turn over the engine. This Bump will run the LP for almost 30 seconds and with my LP I have full pressure after 1 bump and it starts fine. With my stock LP I would bump about 5 or 6 times and then start cranking up to 30 seconds each time. I've never had to crack an injector yet.
Good luck.

I agree with above, but would take the soda bottle of fuel & refill the filter houseing. Put it back together, and bump the starter. If a little diesel spills when you set the filter back in it's no big deal. Better than air in the lines.
