change gearing in rear end?

I was wondering if theres a way to change the gearing in the rear end of my truck. I have the 5 speed on my 1993, and it seems to be geared really low. When im in 5th and i pin it practically to the floor it only goes about 55 to 60. Can anyone tell me from what i said what gearing my truck has and how much it would cost to change it? thanks alot.

Ive never heard of only being able to go 55-60. Many have 4.10 rearends with Getrags, but can usually go faster than that. Sounds like you may have 4.56 gears. Yes you can swap the gearing. You can go with 4.10s if you tow a lot, but mileagewont be great. 3.54s are good for all around towing, good mileage. Just depends on your driving style. Check out some online places, like Randys ring and pinion, for pricing. I think somewhere around $3-400 with install kit and everything.

you sure you are putting pedal to floor ? I have 411 gears and a auto with 39 in tall tires and can cruise at 70 plus all day and still get 16 or better of fuel useage.double check your linkage maybe something is out of wack ?

Yeah, sounds like a linkage problem. Even with 4.11's you should be able to do 85 on flat ground.

If the rear lube is due for a change, drain the differential; and, while the cover is off, count the teeth on the ring-gear and the teeth on the pinion.

Divide the pinion teeth into the ring-gear teeth to get ratio.

4.10:1 gear ratio will be 41 teeth on ring and 10 teeth on pinion.

4.11:1 ratio will be 37 teeth on ring and 9 teeth on pinion.

The 4.10 is a much stronger gear set than the 4.11.

Not sure of tooth counts on 3.55s, as I can't find my chart.

Once you know what your ratio actually is, you will be better informed to make a decision about a possible gear swap.

If it's a 4.x-geared 4x4 truck it has 4.10 in the back and 4.11 in the front. That's to keep the fronts turning ever-so-slightly faster for stability when the 4x4's engaged.

How accurate is your speedometer? How about your throttle linkage? It sounds like you have about 4.6- 5.13 gears if you can only go 60 in 5th with the pedal floored.

wow thanks for all the replys. Well i have driven by 2 or 3 of those speed check things that the highway department sets up on roads where people speed alot and my speedo has read right on the money.

As far as i know, i have it matted to the floor in 5th and it still lingers around 60 tomaybe 65 mph. 4th gear ran out to the complete end gets me 40-45 mph.

Its only a 2x4 dually.

Right. Sticker reads "4.10/4.11 axle ratio." Maybe the 4.11 is in the back.

I have a 4:10 auto and a while ago I could only do 60mph tops. My frozen TV cable was preventing full throttle travel. I know you have a manual, but it defidently sounds like the linkage.

I have an 89 auto that gets 21 mpg but it wouldn't run over 58 mph with a 100 mph tailwind. It's irritating.
