Hey guys, please forgive my ignorance but I just purchased 4-2-1 filter maintenance kit from Geno's Garage and am not really sure how to replace the fuel filter. Can someone point me in the right direction? Where is the canister that houses this filter and what exactly am I looking for. Is this replaced from under the truck or from under the hood? I traced what I believe to be fuel lines to a canister under the hood and not far from the fuel rail, which appears to have a cover which can be removed from the top. Is this a simple enough job that a shade tree mechanic as my self can attempt and accomplish easily? Any advise in explaining this procedure is greatly appreciated.

I read alot of posts, using the SEARCH feature, and then changed my truck's fuel filter without any issues or problems.

FYI, I used the Baldwin PF7977 Fuel Filter

I too condsider myself a shadetree mechanic, but also know my limits. When it is all said and done, you will realize how easy it was. The hardest part for me was actually get back into the cramped area to remove/install the canniester's lid.

Here is the method I used:
Below the fuel filter canniest there is a drain tube, that is just above the front axle.

I used a glass mason jar to catch the fue; the jar will fit perfectly on the axle.

I then open the water/fuel separator on the bottom of the filter cannister to drain out

With the drain open, I unscrew the cap.

Pull out the old filter, and wipe out the housing and look for gunk with a flahslight.

I then popped off the old filter, and installed the new filter.

I lubed the new oring with some Power Service an replace the o-ring on the cap

I then tighten the cannister lid down and closed the drain.

Make sure the removed the jar/jug frolm the axle!

Turn the key on and just barely try to engage the starter so it will turn over the engine. I did this 2-3 times and the truck fired right up.

or you could just not drain it and just pull the filter. that way you dont have to worry about air pockets or anything...an you also dont waste 4-5 dollars of diesel...but to each his own

I prefer to drain it and clean out the can. Just my opinion but I would rather waste a bit of fuel then to leave crap in the can.

so do you drain the line from the can to the cp3 too? and the cp3 and lines from it to the injectors?

Not that much fuel comes out...........maybe like 10 ounces?

I drain mine and refill it with Power Service and then slowly install the filter! It is a VERY good idea to drain the bowel! You'd be amazed at the amount of sediment on the bottom! It's also a good idea to replace the cover! At about $11 each they tend to crack eazy! I change mine every filter change! Cheap insurence! Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions, but what is this Power Service you speak of? And can this entire procedure (cannister drain & cleaning as well) be done from under the hood?

power service is a fuel additive, that is usually added at fill-ups. there is a winter blend, that will keep fuel from gelling in very cold temps, and a summer blend. there are other brands of diesel treatments like lucas, stanadyne, howes, etc., and if you do a thread search, you'll find there's been lots of discussion about which ones seem to work better than others.
