CB radio

I know this has been coverd time and time again.

I am going to get a CB for my truck and I was wondering what is the best radio to get? As far as best transmition and receiving, also antena. I have read some post were people have boosted the output watts? what has to be done for that or would a good unit be acceptible on this.

I went to 5 different places today to look at cb radios and no one carrys them anymore. The only place I can think of is at this truck stop by my work. I will look at them tomarrow.

Cobra and Galaxy, firestick antenna. Its illegal to boost output past 5 watt.
All that does is interfere with radio and tv signal. You can tune to get true 5 watt. I can get out farther than a stock radio but noone can answer me till they get closer.

I run a Galaxy DX94HP with a Wilson 1K roof mount antenna. While my radio is a 10M ham radio and not a CB, I can tell you that Galaxy radios are of excellent quality. The Wilson roof mount antenna is also of excellent quality, it is permanantly mounted thru the roof, I drilled the hole thru/above the rear domelight, dropped the light assy down to access that spot.

The antenna is more than half the battle, a good antenna can make all the difference in both transmit and receive. I have see some real garbage radios get out and receive better than high quality radios when you have a good antenna. Center of the roof acts as good ground plane, you then transmit and receive 360*s. Antennas transmit/receive over the longest metal mass, directional per se, so if you mount your antenna on the front fender/engine area, you actually transmit stronger to the opposite rear.

I have two connex 3300HP. one in my pickup and one that i had in an old mack roll off truck and i now have it in a peterbuilt road tractor. The one i use for work had been through hell and back and still works great. they are also 10 meter radios and are "illegal" if your not licensed with the fcc but i've never been bothered with it and dont know anyone who has. i run K40+ anntenas and they are tunable with the radio. I have gotten out as far as 20 miles mobile to mobile on good days

I have a Galaxy DX979 I bought online. Installed with Firestik II 4 FT-CB Antenna. I could not find a local shop any cheaper or with stock. I ordered mine with the Performance Peak and Tune service. They seem to have done what they said. The radio puts out consistent 5+watts and works fine. Antenna, antenna mounting, antenna cable and proper antenna calibration is as important as the radio, if not more so.

I have had many CBs since the late 60s. This one is fine considering it is "legal" output. LOL.

I ordered my CB, Antenna, cable and mounting kit from this online store:

There are a few other online CB stores that offer the same products and services.

Clay's is one.

Connex 3300 is a great radio, also all the galaxy radios are good, I have an old 88 and a 949 in my kenworth... stay away from fiberglass antenna's they suck. I run wilson 5000's on my semi and a 2000 on my pickup

Well I stoped the truck stop and the have three diff Willson Antena's, one is 300watts, 3500watts, and 5000,watts. Wich one would be the most effective? They also have Cobra CB's the 25, and different options of the 29, Dose the 25 compaired to the 29 perform better that the other? I understand the Antena contributes to the performance. Just want some advice on this so I do throw money in the wrong direction.

Thanks,

Justin

well I picked up a cobra lt clasic 29 and a wilson 2k. I mounted the antena to a stainles angle to the box, then mounted the cb to the plastic center councle by the shifter. I have gotten a cigarette liter plugin for power and I was just wondering if I have to run a seperate ground to the cb?

Yes I would run a good ground. I would also run a power wire with inline fuse from the battery also. It may work with the liter plugin but probably not as good. If you have issues or interference run the power and ground direct.
