I have a 2002 HO 6-speed truck with nothing on it, but an Edge EZ. The LP and VP44 were changed under warranty 18 months ago and I now have 114000 miles on it.

Last week I was towing down South and the truck started belching black smoke when under load and the water temperature would rise. I was able to nurse the truck back home to PA and now I am trying to figure out what has happened.

I just tried to pull codes with the odometer and nothing came up. I spoke to Doug at PDW earlier in the week and he suggested that I pressureize the turbo system to see if there is a leak as he suspected a leaking hose causing loss of boost. I did not find any leaks, other than the pinhole in the EZ elbow, which Edge said is supposed to be there.

I have an appointment scheduled for next Tuesday at the dealership, but I would love to fix this before then. Does anyone have any ideas where I can start to continue diagnosing? The tech at the dealer I talked to said I may have a bad injector. Does that make sense?

Black smoke is hot unburnt fuel leaving out the exaust.


I highly suggest that you get some gauges on your truck so you know whats goin on.

as for your problem sounds like a boost leak to be if it just started happening all of the sudden but some one that knows more then me will chime in here soon. Welcome to DTR

look at your boots on your intercooler you might have ripped one or it finally worked its way lose . that would cause a rase in egts , water temps and make it smoke alot.

:UPDATE: I wound up taking it to the dealership to have it diagnosed. It turns out the wastegate shaft had a c-clip that had come off so the turbo was not spooling up, thus unburnt fuel. I hope that can help someone down the road.
