Carry a Spare Lift Pump, What do you think???

Man I love this Truck!!!

It's a good think because we are about to set off on a FullTime RV life and our only Transportation will be our RAM-2500. So if you had 52K miles on your truck and were doing this would you;

1. get a campain liftpump and carry it as a spare?

2. get a campain liftpump and carry it as a spare and do a vulcan kit and relocate the liftpump to the frame?

3. Change the liftpump now, get a campain liftpump and carry it as a spare and do a vulcan kit and relocate the liftpump to the frame?

4. something else

last question, are the campain pumps still available???

see my sig below for my truck!

Dont waste your money on a Campaign pump....its the same factory junk.

At the very least get, a Vulcan Big Line kit, and Holly Black or Carter 4601HP (I believe it is) and move this pump to the framerail.

If you have the cash, get a better fuel system upgrade. It will pay for itself.

I vote for option #2. My original lift pump lasted more than 100,000 miles. I used the Geno's relocation kit. I have before and after the filter pressure sensors. I can determine whether low fuel pressure is from a plugged filter or lift pump problems with a flip of a switch. With all this and the newer pump with internal bypass, I never see fuel pressure below 13psi. Even with the Smarty cranked up.

add the campain lp on the frame, with the big line kit, leave the eng LP
( still operating ) as a backup ( easy swap of the fuel lines at the frame
( plug the old line ) and at the Filter input ( plug that also ).

Or Super dupper LP at frame, But I would still carry a spare..

Note " I was sadly disappointed when I discovered the " Not relaible "
aspect of the Dodge/cummins vp44, as I to do a lot of RV travel,
First time in my life ( 68) that I have emergency service...
Sadly, I think the days of reliability and on the road repair are gone forever,

Its not really the VP-44 thats unreliable. Its more so the lift pump. The VP-44's are pretty decent if you provide enough fuel to keep it lubed and cool (my personal belief is that its important to not run the tank too low as the fuel stays hot and doenst have a chnace to cool). Heat is the enemy here.

Guys, I think steering him to another Campaign pump is a mistake. The campaign pumps are not longe $60...they are closer to $200 (last time I checked)....

Get something (anything) better than a campaign/stock lift pump.

Have you see the Walbro kits?:

I carry two, both are installed in the piping. I just swap the wires and two valves and I should be off and running to at least get home.

Thanks for the Help

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

Wouldn't it be great to know how on many stock trucks, the lift pump / vp44 combo, made it to 100k miles plus without failure???

Thanks, Bill

I was in the same dilemma, what to do about the lift pump "problem" if anything. But thinking logically helped me make the decision to go with the FASS syatem, though I was not going to spend over $600 on their best setup either. Maybe with a mega horsepower rig but with a slightly above stock truck I felt there were more economical solutions that would be just as good. The FASS warranty of 6 years is untouchable by anyone else in the industry, from what I've been told, and that would seem to me to point to reliability, which is important when talking about your fuel pump. The complete FASS kit was about $450 and everything's included, which is also important (to me) as some of the other systems around require the purchase of the pump you want to use, so their advertised price, while low, isn't the whole story. While the FASS products are easy to find, talking to a knowledgeable person who knows fuel systems and won't try and sell you the most expensive setup in the inventory helps bunches too. (Without trying to sound like an advertisement and keeping it short here,) I had many such questions that were cheerfully answered by Eric at Vulcan Performance in Vancouver WA. While he has many choices, I would suggest calling and talking to him about the options in different price ranges he has available there, along with any questions you may have that aren't answered here. They have been mentioned numerous times on this and other boards for their lift pump solutions, so lots of folks have dealt with them and have experience with their products. But I think if you keep in mind the total picture....cost, reliability, ease of install, quality built with a FINE reputation among those who use the product, along with the best warranty to be found anywhere, the mid priced FASS setup is the way to go for our stock to mildly built trucks, no matter where you get it. FWIW. Good luck!

Last week I discovered a leak in my lift pump that I think started due to ULSD. At 134k or so and on the second lift pump I just figure its cheaper to replace the stock pump. I read several threads and bought 3 campaign pumps @ 64.90 and now have the replacement in and two backups.

I have 299,000 miles on my 99, original VP44 and only replaced the LP once. Believe it was upwards of 200,000 when I changed the LP - it was still working, just giving me some funny reading on the fuel gauge.
I purchased my replacement from O'Rileys for $180 with a lifetime warranty.

Running the carter 4601HP and the best thing I did for pump life was to install a bypass regulator. I wasted two pumps before installing the regulator.
The pump puts out way more fuel than we need and it was wearing out the internal regulators. You could blow through the pumps backwards.
Food for thought.

Question...Stevie, did you use a Vulcan kit with the 4601 hp? If not, what kind of threads are on this pump? I assume 3/8" NPT??

Thanks.
