The owner said it had a little blow by before it ran low on oil and stacked the #4 rod bearings. Four of the top rings were broken. I'm not sure just how it was done but the engine was very abused in it's short life. 114k on the clock.

I find that hard to believe that not prefilling the filter will do that. I own an aircraft and the oil is allowed to take 30 seconds to come to pressure after starting. And tha engine is way more important than any Cummins.

I'll have to admit, I feel more sorry for the truck than the owner that doesn't take care of simple things like checking oil and abusing it.
Must've made one heck of a sound
when it went!!
How much is the repair bill for this guy? Loks like atleast 16-24 hrs of labor + a used block ouch.

Just a plain ole guy
No problem. I personally know a guy, we call him Poot, that had a 1970 Chevy with a strait 6. #5 kicked out the side just like this. He just put on a glove, fished the piston and rod out the hole, then kept it full of oil up to the bottom of the hole and drove it all thru college. Yea, it had a little miss at idle but at 70 it was fine. he even pulled his boat to the lake with it, many times. He would change oil for anyone if they let him have their old oil and he kept it full with that.
