I do not have much faith in Carfax. My dad and I ran one on a truck that was for sale on Ebay. The truck was being advertised with a salvage title. The seller was very upfront about the previos damage and rebuild. I ran the Carfax to see what they had listed and it came back clean. I got a refund from Carfax. Just my experience.

Found this from another forum and thought it was interesting. Another vote for little faith in Carfax:

"Long story short though, called a few folks, and one of them was really helpful, pulled up the insurance's comprehensive loss reporting dealie (he called it C.L.U.E.). Showed the "Excellent, like new condition" truck I was buying had a 13000 dollar claim on july 11th 2003. HOLY COW! Thats half of what the truck is worth! Its still NOT a salvage title, and some poor shmuck is going to buy this truck thinking its a non thrasher.
The insurance guy did this for free, we got a few chuckles out of the report as the big 13k claim wasnt the only one. Never thought to consult insurance companies about this! He earned my buisness! Seller was offering a free carfax lemon check, that turned up nothing. Carfax works, sometimes. this CLUE thing works ALL the time if there was ever any claim against it."

Never heard of this CLUE thing, but it might be worth checking out.

I too have issues with Carfax. We purchased a car via ebay and when we picked it up the guy told us he had changed the instrument cluster due to a non-working tach so the mileage was incorrect. We did the paperwork and turned it in when we registered the car. A couple years later we ran a Carfax on it and it was clean. I haven't trusted it since.

Just got out a deal on a Honda Accord for my wife from a dealer. Car had 12k miles on it and looked to be taken care of, did a Carfax at the dealer and did show a minor front end accident, so checked the car out and could only see that the front bumper had been changed, no big deal. bought the car and little things started showing up, but always covered uner warranty, except could not get rid of road noise we kept hearing like something was open to outside. Dealer put car in their body shop and found that the passenger door and rear quarter panel was changed and not sealed properly, which they fixed, but noise came back. Had the car about 18 months and told the dealer we did not want to deal with the damage for the life of the car and got them to work with me on a trade and new car deal. The whole point of my story here is that the Carfax report was misleading and it took 18 months before we really knew it.
