Capacity of PML Diff cover
All... please check my logic/thinking. This could be an expensive mistake if it was wrong I'd guess.
I understood that my stock diff cover took 7.65 pints and/or should be filled to 3/4" BLEOW the hole +/- 1/4 inch. This makes sense since the pan has a stamped "Fill Level" line 1" below the edge of the fill hole.
Now... my new diff cover says it adds .75 quarts to the capacity (that's 1.5 pints right?) so, to fill this new cover should take 9.15 pints. (I just did some searching on this forum to figure that all out)
When I installed the PML cover I tried comparing the depth of the fill line and hole on the stock pan to the hole on the new pan. Since they are irregular shape it is not easy to just measure. As near as I could tell, the fill holes were in the same place, (eg height) on both pans. For some reason I got it in my head to fill the new pan up to the fill hole level. I added 11 pints and ran out... I figured it was OK to use for a while and left it that way a week ago.
Today I went out to top it off and I got to thinking... before adding anyting I measured it and the fluid is about 1/4 inch below the fill. I did put in 11 pints already, which is more than the amount I just calculated it should take. Now I'm thinking that I'm a little OVER full, but OK. I don't think I really need to fill it to the hole? and... being a little overfull should not matter? For next time I think I'll just add 10 pints and leave it at that?

We always fill them up till the fluid just starts to seep out of the fill plug, the cover is designed to add an extra quart over stock, the information material you got 0.75 quarts from must be outdated info. We have been selling them and telling customers that 1.0 quart is the increase forever, hopefully we didn't confuse you!!

Just went and topped it off. It didn't actually need too much more, so I'm thinking the total capacity was about 11 pints. The base number of 7.65 pints came from a post... so maybe that's off.
btw - thanks for making me check my manual again... I had gotten the 3/4" below +/- 1/4" for the 10.5"... I have the 11.5" rear which is 1/4" +/-1/4" or.... just dribbling out.

I just recieved my PML rear diff today in the mail (also got the + 2 qts deeper trans pan)
So you found out it takes 10+ pints ?
BTW, 2 questions
What type and weight gear oil did you get and did you need a new gasket ?

My maintenance manual states 7.65 pints for the AAM 11.5. I just received my PML Cover today and the instructions state add an additional 1/2 to 1 quart. That puts the total capacity at: 9.65 pints.
Also, the PML instructions say torque differential bolts to 20 ft lbs or whatever the maintenance manual says.....so, I looked it up and the book says 30 ft lbs.

Yes, 75W-90 is what the manual states. There are alternates such as 140 for constant heavy towing, etc. I ordered the gasket online at: www.dodgeparts.com since it's always cheaper than the dealer. I paid around $18.00.

I just installed the PML cover for the Dodge 11.5" (p/n 10361) and it required 5 quarts of fluid to bring up to the level check hole. I used Royal Purple 75w-140.
