Let's see if we can get some sort of a pattern here in regard to lift pump failures, third gen. only.

I'll start, with one failure for Canada!

Man, I really have no idea, haven't lost a pump yet, but I will say that my truck ran rough by the time I got to Whitehorse (From Montana w/ a brand new Fuel Filter). Changed the filter in Whitehorse and it was black as coal. We're talking maybe 2000 mi on that filter? So I know there was some really bad diesel along the way in Canada. I know the truck felt a little underpowered after I filled up in Edmonton, just figured I got winterblend and that was why. But, I have gotten crappy fuel in the states too, so who knows. -Steve

Mine went at about 40k,

I was told "the high level of electric conductivity in the local fuel supply",
Dealer had replaced many. Many of those used Shell fuel. I use ESSO/EXXON only ( fleet acct.)

So, another one for Canada.

One more for Canada.. @~43000km now @ 86000 and still on the second one.. But I've used Howes since the first one crapped out.. Saving pennies for the Scotty setup.

Our 2003 EMS truck has had the pump replaced now three times. It does a ton of idling. Since DC doesn't seem to be addressing the problem we are now considering an aftermarket replacement for the stock pump.

Personal truck has been fine so far.

Mine at 26000km.waiting for the the second one to go anytime now.Thats funny how they blame the fuel for the failures.I don't here of the competion complaining about fuel pumps.I run hours upon hours on cat and detroit diesels died fuel dirty fuel and they don't skip a beat and trust me they take a beating.DAVE...

Dealer's diesel mechanic says now that they've installed the pump in the tank that should clear up most of the problems. He told me to keep the tank over half full all the time especially driving around in the city and change the filter regularly. He says here in Alberta Canada we have 80% of all pump failures in Canada, (but that's because we buy all the trucks) My friend never changed his fuel filter for 60 K and when he did it was black as coal. He said he didn't know you had to!, no failure yet. The dealer also recommended Stanadyne (alcohol free) as refineries are stripping out the sulpher from the fuel as an emissions requirement. Manufacturers have been relying on sulpher as a lubricant, so before it was okay to use a fuel additive with alcohol, now it is not.
Anyway just reporting on what I've been told since buying my new diesel last month.

Pick me,,, Pick me,, 28000Km. And Canada's in the lead, A report from Shell Canada mentioned that since the new low sulphur requirement, there were a bunch of reports in the U.S. about all kinds of pump failures. They insist that there fuel quality is of the highest. All I need to know is when did they started this low sulphur fuel biz and then relate it to when our 03's came out and PRESTO, we may get answers.

The Sulpher itself isnt a lubercant. Actually could be a lil hard on some stuff What takes the lubrircating value of the fuel away is the chemicals they use to get the sulfer out.

Wonder when Canada went to the ultra low sulpher fuel. Just from the above post looks like most of the failures are in Canada. Could it be the lost of lubrication??

What are the symptoms of a lift pump failure? I noticed a few times there is a momentary ack of response on the trottle....would this be a symptom of a failure?
