If you have a truck you bought used, how can you tell if the tranny is upgraded?

first of all look at the transmission itself, some aftermarket companies paint their trannies, 2nd when it goes into lock up how tight does it feel? this will tell you if your TC is upgraded, also how firm are your shifts? does it slip into each gear? or shift firmly each shift? if you don't feel any of these, chances are your tranny either isn't upgraded, or is older with wear. Just imo

Take the inspection plate off and look at the TC. Does it have a drain? Stock does not, upgraded does.
