can someone tell me how to prime a jeeps fuel system?
My gas tank got a hole in it last week and i put a new one on yesterday. It cranked and ran for about 45 seconds and now it won't do anything. I already tried pouring gas in carb several times with no luck after the gas burns up. Is there a trick that i need to know???Its a 89 cherokee....Thanks!!

It shouldn't have a carburetor, it should be fuel injected. Can you hear the fuel pump kick in when you turn the key to the "run" position? Perhaps you forgot to plug the fuel pump in?

yeah your right, anyhow i can't hear anything when i turn the switch on. I have two filters right in front of the tank and they have both filled up halfway. Why won't they fill on up? I have turned the switch on and off several times like you have to do on my dodge but nothing happens. Any suggestions??

You say you poured fuel down the carb several times?? unless the engine been changed to a early YJ/CJ 4.2? they never made a carbed 4.0 so I would imagine your talkin about the 4.0 6 thats FI? You should hear a slightbuzz from the tank when the key is first turned on, This is pressurizing the system so to speak. If it still wont fire I would guess a few things here. #1 The fuel pump smoked running it dry, unlikely as Ive never seen one die, My 95 has 190K and still going. #2 you sucked every last bit of crud into the filter and its plugged. Check out NAXJA, for cherokees issues, these guys no most all about Xj`s.' Good luck.

Does it have a mechanical fuel pump on the block or an electrical in the tank?
I would try to disconnect the fuel line from the carb, have a helper crank it and see whether you get fuel or not. If yes it's the carb, if no you know the direction you will have to go.
When you installed the new tank did you take care not to mix up feed and return line?
