dealer said i need them replaced. cant justify spending over $2500 having them yank the motor to do this so im gonna have a friend help me do it. someone told me it could be done, was a pain in the butt but possible. just need to know before i try to tackle it. I really dont want to pull the motor. thanks

it can be done i pulled the #4 cylinder on my 03. but if the crank needs turning your out of luck

You can do a between the rails rebuild but not sure if you can get the crank out or not. The 1st one we did we cut the cross member out. (PITA) Now I usually loosen the bolts in the passenger side MM and radiator shroud and jack the engine up as high as possible to get clearance to drop the pan and you should be good to go.

You might want to drop the last main bearing and have a look , how long did you run it for without oil ????

motor leaked oil out of oil filter for about 20 mins. from when i left my house until the dash lit up. my dash lights went on and i saw the oil pressure gauge drop, i pulled over and turned off engine within 15 seconds of that happening.

Well it won't cost much except time to have a look at the damage.

You might be right , I'd still drop a main bearing cap and have a look.

If you pull the pan off you may as well check all the bearings down there. I really don't know how they can tell that there is only one rod bearing that is toast without pulling the pan...

Do have a knock or metal in the oil that was drained from the pan after the incident? If not why do you think the bearings are bad?

If you do go in then replace them all not just the rod bearings.

truck is sitting at dealer now and i havent cheked the pan for debris.

somehow the dealer isolated the noise to just that one cylinder so its just an assumption at this point. They recommended replacing all the bearings which makes sense. The rod bearings themselves are pretty inexpensive so might as well replace them all. We will take a look at teh rest of th ebearings and prolly just replace them all as you say

I think it's unlikley you are going to have connecting rod bearing damage/wear and no crank damage.Although I have never had a diesel apart for that reason I have had plenty of auto engines apart and those two usually go hand in hand.If you can hear it it's major wear.
