Camshaft Removal

Does anyone know of a way to pull the camshaft gear off without a cam puller/installer? I don't have access to one being it's Saturday night. I could order the tool, but it's 657.00 dollars. Not worth if only used a few times. I need to replace the gear housing gasket. If you know a way without the tool, please let me know or send pm. Be much appreciated.

search you tube. I saw a time lapse video of a cam change. They did not use a tool to pull or reinsert the cam. They did remove the whole front end of the truck.

Thanks buddy! My truck is a 2005 5.9. I should have mentioned that earlier. These engines are great, but the special tools they require get very costly. I will search the tube. Have a great Memorial Day and keep all 4 wheels between the white lines and the dirty side down if drinking lots of beeeeer!

All you need is the dowels and rubber bands. You can use a piece of abs pipe to put into cam shaft hole to prevent lifters from falling into oil pan. The dowels will need to be proper length and diameter to fit tightly into lifter hole. The dowels are cut at the end to make sure they fit tightly into the lifter. Then use several rubber bands to hold the dowels together.

Hey Big! It's 6spd here. You posted on the rear main seal thread I had. I have alldata like you do. I know about the dowels procedure etc to keep the tappets from falling into the crankcase. I have my oil pan off too so not worried about that. I just wanted to know a way to pull the gear off since it's pressed on without having to go get a tool. I buy enough tools already.

Removing gear isn't a good idea since it will need to be heated and then pressed on. If you get the gear off you might not get it back on. If you do not heat gear it will crack when trying to press it back on. Believe me I learned the hard way or should I say the machine shop did.

It was a link on here sometime back, maybe 6 or 9 months. But it was from you tube. Maybe a search on cams here will find it.

Also, the procedure to remove the cam that is used most aften is to remove the whole front of the truck and lift the engine slightly then the cam will come out with the gear attached to the cam.

If it was just R&I on the cam and the gear was going to stay on the cam then that would be the procedure.

If you are changing cams and need to reuse the gear and are askng about removing the gear from the cam then see other posts above. Still, most people remove the cam and gear as a unit then separate or join them on the bench.

You're correct sir and I know to heat the gear up to get it back on. I was just looking for a quick solution since I didn't have a puller at my disposal last night.

I am wasting to much time trying to buck the system. I am just pulling the gear and cam together.
