I have replaced my cam sensor. Its between the VP44 and PS pump. On the back of the front cover. Its very easy to do I cant remember is there is 1 or 2 allan head bolts. It was impossible to get my big hands between the VP and PS pump so I had someone with smaller hands help me get the socket into the bolt and I wrenched from under the truck. Took about 15-20min.

I noticed a check engine light and a dead tach sometimes. I got the new sensor from cummins for abound 50USD, but I put it off until the truck wouldnt stay runnin for very long and I had No tach movement at all. Then it was time ...

PS. My truck is a 2001.5 so it doesnt have a crank sensor (it gets all of the info from just the cam sensor) Are you sure its the cam and not the crank sensor?? If its the crank sensor its on the lower side of the block on the passenger side behind the starter..... Hope this helps..
