Camper Advice

I have a 99 Quad cab short box and we are looking to get a camper. What is the size of camper that would fit my truck. I see some 6.5 feet to 10 foot campers ....What would work?

I have an 8'6 camper in mine, thats about the limit for the short box. I leave my gate down and it overhangs a few inches. Looks a little like this...

In general, if your truck is not factory certified for camper use, you shouldn't use one. That statement aside, the legal limits, appear to be tire weight rating and axle weight rating. However, if you do get in an accident, they will probably go after the mfr GVWR on the door sticker.

What does this all mean? Don't get too big of a camper that you can't comfortably haul. More weight = more equipment (air bags, etc) = uses more fuel. Also, depending on where you will be camping, a hard side v. soft side (pop-up) camper may be worth considering.

We recently bought an '03 Lance 1025 to put on my dually. It weighs in at 3200 and we haven't totally stocked it yet! So my truck (with camper & full tank of fuel) weighs in at 10800. GVWR limit is 11500; Front GAWR is ~5000, Rear in ~9600; Tires are ~15000 total So we will probably be over GVWR by a few hundred, when loaded and towing the boat, but well under the axle and tire weights.

There's a LOT more to consider with a TC vs. most other RV's. But, they are THE easiest to tow with!

Tony
