Cam talk (seems to be high right now)

I have a stocked cammed 05 right now and I do mostly sledpulling with it. I have been kicking the idea about an H2 cam but when I call around different people tell me to put in a MaxSpool cam. I have no idea who does the work on them as they said that I needed to send my old stock cam back in.

I myself think a regrind cam is the worst cams out as they mod the stock one. I have been really big into ATV racing and regrinds are a no no in them. The stress on them make them break or crack. As for a Cummins they are hard on cams as well stock (mainly p pumped trucks). So any insite would be good.

I really like the looks of a Formula 1 cams as they are billet and I would use there springs too. DonM has helped me alot on my injectors and he will be upgrading them again this winter when John at Floor It and I tear the truck down again.

Any info you guys that have seen or done cams swaps let me know any info on the cams. As for the MaxSpool I feel they are a little small as I was told I didn't need valve springs when going to them. I think the springs are cheap insurance when it comes to even stock cam.

you won't find a more heated and knowledgeable thread about them than this....

after spending a hour reading it myself, I don't believe a conclusion was made. It all depends on who you talk too. I think when it comes down to it.... both are good cams

Wow alot of baddling back and forth on there. I think the H2 might be the best for me as it is a new cam.

maybe you should get pourindiesel on here to say what he thinks about his cam. he has told me before that it helps out. he had a regrind before and I dont think he cared for it. im pretty sure he has the helix 2 and has good things to say about it. im not gonna be his mouthpiece. pm him or he will get on here and say what he thinks. if I keep my truck that will be one of the mods I get about next summer.

I know I am going to be putting in a H2 cam for sure. I just didn't know what this Maxspool cam was all about. I know schields also do regrinds and that cam doesn't seem to do very well around here.

I have a Scheid re-grind I'll give you...its sitting in my garage!LOL!

The H2 from Don M/F1 is a great cam. For one it has the bolt on piece that is added security for retaining the gear.

Here are some frequent questions about the H2:

Does it have a higher lift compared to stock??

YES! I have eyeballed it myself...no I didnt measure but any higher and the cam looks like it wouldnt fit down the journal while installing.

Does it have increased duration?:

Without a doubt the H2 has some serious duration. One look at your stock cam versus the F1 unit and its night and day.

Are valve springs required?:

You would be stupid for not installing valve springs....Cams and springs go hand in hand. Both will increase air flow and correct combustion events.

Performance:

Will the cam increase mileage?:

Most will see a slight gain in mileage or for those with huge turbos mileage lost mileage will return.

Will the cam decrease spool time?:

Yes the H2 will let your engine breathe...on the exhaust and intake side your turbo spool time will be cut by about 100-200rpm's give or take.

Will the H2 reduce EGT's?:

Yes, it will reduce WOT egt's which will extend engine life..

........................................

Within the last 2 months or so I decided that after a year of running the H2 Cam that I would check valve lash to see if the Cam was "going away" or wearing incorrectly.
Valve lash had not changed more than .001" on any of the exhaust or intake settings. This was impressive to me. Seems to be holding up very well.
