Question What cam should i buy for MPG?

Hi guys, I just bought a bunch of stuff for my truck, including a ported head with hd valve springs and o-rings. While i have the head off, i would like to put a cam in it but am not sure about which one i should get. I have heard great things about helix cams but don't know if they give you the best gain in MPG. I saw the Diesel Power Mag article where they put a pdr cam in a truck and gained 2 MPG, will the helix cam provide the same results?

Also if it matters, I also just bought 5 inch exhaust, an ats exhaust manifold, a banks intercooler with an intake manifold, and a tag 3.

Also, should i get a marine gasket when i put the head on? If so does anyone have a part number or a website where i can get one.

Thanks for all your help, you guys are great

Were you mil-spec or a contractor?

To the OP - Certainly a Helix 1 would improve your mileage, just due to it's improvement of the engine's VE.

Do any of the cam vendors make the cams' specs available?

I read all the cam threads I can find. So I am following this one. It might be hard to find input just because not enough people have done cam swaps. I thought Helix was the only company. Who else makes cams that you are looking at?

Piers diesel research offers a regrind cam, this is the one that they did the article in diesel power mag on. If you want to check out the article, go to their website and look under the tech tab.

I will, I actually have every Diesel Power mag. published around my house. I remember that article, if I am correct they had a section titled; "was it worth the cost." Since you got some big ole' modding ***** going on, definitely go for it while the head & stuff is off.

A cam is one of those sleeper items you can put on your truck. Fuel economy, I don't know. HP not really, The way it helps spool a larger turbo and helps cool the egt's ya its good for that. If you are going to go a little nuts on mods like it sounds I agree. I didn't catch if you did valve springs already if not they go hand in hand. If I had to do it over again I would do a helix 2 cam. Timinva from TRE Diesel would be the man to talk to.

I couldn't find anything about that article...

They do mention on the cam page that the lift, duration & LSA are larger - but that much I think we already knew!

I remember that the MPG gained around 2 mpg, and they did a calculation on how long it would take to pay for itself. Don't remember exactly, but it was on the order of 40,000 to 60,000 miles before the mod was free. I remember that the EGT's were lower too.

S/on Hey, even though we waste gas (er, diesel) it's ok, because it's for the emissions! /Sarcasm off/

BTW, "Shaking redCTD", thanks for your service. Maybe one of these days patriotism won't be mired in Republician and Democrat 'stuff'. The 'stuff' that's out there, it isn't good. Politics-it's DIRTY business.
