cam position sensor location?

First let me start with WOW! what a great resource this web site is. The amount of knowledge on here is overwhelming. That been said, Ive used the search feature with some luck but not my ultimate solution.

The check engine light came on my truck and mechanic gets the code back for a bad cam position sensor. We order one he tells me its a easy fix as its a external sensor. Heres the problem, Im not real familiar with my own engine, and in trying to save myself some money on an easy fix Ive not been abel to locate the exact postion of this sensor.

After searching here Ive seen it posted that is near the injector pump, but Ill be honest guys I dont knwo what that looks like. =( I even went so far as to hitting up my local library for a Chilton's book and had no luck.

I guess what Im begging for is a picture of the location of the cam postion sensor because Ive not located it.

on the 24v, the cam osition sensor is under the injection pump where the 12v used to have the timing pin. It is held in place by two allen or torx screws can't remember right now. You will need long allen or torx bits since it is not easy to get to. Just look for the pigtail under your engines injection pump...you will find it there.

Yep Richard is right, and I believe they are allan screws. I did one on my truck about 2 months ago. Its a simple job, but a guy with overly sized hands (like myself) its a tough job due to a guy doesnt have much room in there. (between the PS pump and the VP44)

Oh yea, head over to the local cummins shop and get the cam sensor there its about 20-30USD cheaper than getting one right from the Dodge deal and its the same part.

Yeah Dodge wanted 77 buks for one and we ended up getting it at a Kenworth dealer here for 45 which I thought was a bit weird but hey its still a genuine Cummins part and I saved a buck.

Thanks for the responces guys, Ill head back out and try again to locate this thing.

Welcome to the site! Here is a diagram that you might find helpful. Click here

You'll find that most of the Cummins parts can be had at MHC in your area for a fraction of the price from the dealer. Also if you're doing your own oil and filter changes, you can get them from Kenworth as well, Fleetguard being the filter to use.

If you need some tips about doing your own oil changes, just ask or do a search (you'll find a lot of help on this board). I like the idea of doing my own work for a few of reasons. One being that I'm a bit frugal, and you can save some money. Another is you can find the best oil and parts that you feel comfortable with. And lastly when you get under your truck a couple of times, you might see something that wasn't like that the last time, like a shock leaking or coolant dripping off of a hose that someone else might not give a second thought to, and you make sure it's done right.
