Caliper Bushings Burned Out

We pulled a wheel off to investigate some front end knocking/clunking that i have been feeling in the steering wheel and brake pedal. I noticed my calipers were kinda loose. After looking, on the passenger side, both the rubber bushings in the caliper were missing and the sleeves that go around the bolts were pretty rusty and pitted. The calipers were so off kilter, it took out my brake pads. I couldnt afford new calipers, but the parts place had a rubber bushing kit for $7 which i bought. They didnt have a bolt and sleeve kit in so i wire wheeled the sleeves down ( they were really rusted and pitted) Put the new pads on and my brakes were back and for most of today the clunk i was feelin was gone. After the truck sitting in the sun all day, i left home and sure as hell, the clunking under braking and acceleration was back, but not half as bad. If the rubber bushings have been gone for a long time, could that have oblonged the holes in the caliper and since the bolt sleeves are rotted out kinda, could the calipers still be moving causing a clunk? Whats your take on this?

I seem to remember something about excessive clearance in the steering shaft causing a clunk. Do you still have the stock shaft between the column and box?
