A/C Performance Mod....

For those of you who are like me and not satisfied with your A/C even after having it checked out at dealer and given a "works fine". I have a solution. It is old school simple. See the attached pic of my coolant shut off valve. Get one of these and you will have much cooler air coming out of your vents. I will post pics of the install location in the next post.

Here is where it goes. It is the heater hose that runs from the head to the fire wall.

One more shot. Sorry for the crappy pics. After install I took a ride with it open to purge any air bubbles I might have introduced into the system. Then I shut it and took a long ride up the interstate in 93 degree weather. I was after a short while getting 36 - 38 degree air coming out of the vents. It usually is around 42 at best on recirculate. Once it cooled off, I switched it back to normal A/C and the air coming out was staying just below 40.

Now if anyone knows of a 12V valve that I could wire in to the A/C and could live in the high temps I would go that route. For now the manual one will keep me cool.

The hot water valve has been taken out of auto cooling system for a number of years. Some techs and I discussed your mod last year pondering ac performance. We came up with its not a good idea to block off the heater core. The new long life anti-freezes have a tendencies to turn to jelly or hard crystals. There may be other issues also.I don't think it was the price of valves and such for dropping the old cut off the heater system from the rest of the cooling system in autos and trucks.Defrost/defog issue also.

My '04 Ferd came from the factory with one on it,but it only worked when in recirculate mode. I re-routed the vaccum lines so that it worked when in any vent mode. Our trucks don't have any vaccum available to use, so I went manual for now. Every few days I plan to open it up and let it flow normally. When I find an affordable electric valve, I'll wire it up for convenience and optimum cooling system performance. But for now I like being cool during the hot SC summer.

Try a Red Dot 72R7005. Hard to find though.

Good link Spitfire. There's one other benefit to this mod even though it's a small one. Your fuel mileage should increase just a tick since the compressor won't have to work as hard or as often.

No problem. I put it on three different forums because I wanted the word to get out. Now it has.

So Nick. I would bet that thousands of trucks will have better A/C thanks to you doing this and posting about it. How does it feel to be a hero???
I'll definitely be looking under the hood to see if I can do it.....

Did you have to ask the counter person for that part or is it something that they usually have out in the aisles?

Dodgezilla,

For the 6.7L the heater core has to be bypassed for the fact the turbo is also getting coolant from the same lines. It can be done but a little more plumbing is involved.

I bought mine at Advance Auto Parts. Factory Air parts can be found at most major auto parts stores.
