A/C Fan

My A/C fan seems to have a mind of it's own. The fan stops and starts when ever it wants. This happens at all speed settings. It does run at the proper speed when running. Does the same whether in A/C mode or just vent. Any ideas/suggestions?
Thanks and take care.

Sounds like the circuit breaker to me- but use an amperemeter to check if your fan draws too much. You can swap the circuit breaker (should be in the dashboard fuse box IIRC) because they are rather cheap.

Could be any number of things. 1st...the fan isn't on a circuit breaker, it is on a fuse. The ignition switch could be bad, the blower resistor could be bad, could have a poor ground to the blower motor, could have poor connections at the control head.........gotta figure out what it loses when it quits. You could tie in a small light ( like a test light ) and have it hang under the dash to figure out if it loses power. Then play with the control head or ignition switch to see which one makes the power come back. If it doesen't lose power, then need to figure out where it is losing ground.

Mine does the same thing on my Dodge Van I drive at work. Try banging the top of the steering wheel when it quits. That's what I do maybe once a week when she quits. I'm leaving mine because that's my only issue and the van will never run right again if I let our vehicle guys touch it. It may not ever blow again if they touch it.

Blower Motor

I work for the U.S. dep of defense here in the country of Panama. I have had my 98 truck here since I brought it down in 97 with 1500 miles on it (I bought it new). Well the a/c runs everyday. I had the same problem. With my experience of trying to fix fans (not just in cars) as we use them all the time it is probably the brushes in the motor. You have a 96. Has the motor to your knowledge ever been changed? The comutator also wears. What ends up happening is you have dead spots in the fan where the lack of material on the brush coupled with a week spring that is now extended close to its max due to the worn brush plus the worn comutator surface it causes the brushes to break contact with the comutator. It is hit or miss when you turn the fan off and then back on. If it stops on a dead spot it will not start again as there is not continuity in the motor. It will come on for no apparent reason as you are driving as you have hit a bump and it causes the comutator to shift 1 or 2 thousands of an inch and then bang it is working. As the fan is turning so fast in any speed it jumps the dead spots with ease making you think that the fan is ok thus wasting a lot of time trying to blame something else and then convince yourself that the something else is the problem. Almost all of the time you can get it to duplicate outside of the truck. Jumper it with the battery a few times if it does spin. If at some point it does not spin then just turn the shaft a little and it will then spin when you apply power again. Just buy a new one and go about your business. Worn bushings, worn comutator, worn brushes, worn windings. It is weak anyways and not worth trying to fix. Hope this helps. Joe

I agree with Joe. You can also smack the motor when it is not turning and sometimes that will get it turning. I found one in a "u-pull-it" yard for $10 and got the resister at the same time for another $2. The speed resistor is big bucks from the dealer. NAPA and others also sell the fan, I think around $40.

What do you fly? I'm a retired CW4 Apache pilot.
