A/C Evaporator questions
OK-lucky me I need to replace mine. The die showed that it was leaking. I have some questions:
1) Do you really have to remove the dash as my 1998 Service manual says?
2) How did you recover the refridgerant?
3) Did you add extra oil when reassembling the system?
4) how much oil?
5) Do you have to put a vacuum pump on the system and draw it down before reassembly?
Thanks guys,
I'm not an A/C expert, but have some knowledge.

Answers as follows:
1. Pretty sure YES
2. Refrigerant recovery machine (or go to local mechanic shop and have them suck it out and be ready to pay a fee since they have to pay to get rid of it themselves).
3. Usually you are supposed to measure the amount of oil that comes out of the new compressor before installation, re-install and add a certain amount based on whether you install a new reciever (dryer). I think place where you buy compressor can look up amount in a catalogue based on your application.
4. See #3
5. Evacuate system AFTER reassembly to a 5 micron vacuum to assure no non-condensables (moisture) is in system. Any water vapor in the system will react with the refrigerant and turn into an acidic compund.
Good LUCK,
Gary

Yes, you have to take the dash mostly out. I suspend them on the right by the grab handle over the door.
I add 2 oz. ref. oil on evaporator replacement. The manual has a chart for how much oil with each component replaced.
Have a shop reclaim the system and tell them you'll be back for an evacuation and recharge after you do the repair.
It's a good idea to replace the accumulator periodically, especially if the system sat empty.
The shop should evacuate (vacuum) the system for about half an hour before the recharge.

The shop should have a micron gauge to measure the amount of vacuum they can pull. 5 micron is the standard we use in commercial A/C work to be confident we removed all of the moisture in the system.
Good Luck and let us know how you fare after completion, inclusive of skinned knuckles and how many choice expletive deleted's.........lmao

I had mine done a couple of years back. The tech said it was real common, seems they designed the airbox bad and clearances are tight so the evap sits in a puddle of water alot of the time.
