I've noticed that my AC compressor is cycling even when I dont have the AC or Defrost selected. Anybody know why this is ?

Maybe that slight hesitation you're talking about in your signature is the A/C compressor kicking on and off.

Now, why the A/C compressor solenoid is firing is beyond me. Maybe someone with a wiring schematic will chime in.

what position do you have your mode switch in? face and floor are the only two positions where it won't run.

Yeah, mines the same way. Cycles in all positions, even with all air control switches off.

I did try to run the A/C the other day, and noticed that it wasnt blowing cold. This would makes sense if I'm low on coolant. My auto repair shop recharged my system last year....so I must have a pretty good leak. Seems like there are quite a few on this board that have AC problems, must be common in these trucks? What is the most common failure....condensor leak?

Also, I really dont think the idle hesitation has anything to do with the AC compressor. Guess anything is possible however.

I know in the humid northern parts techs have seen evap leaks due to "krap" building up in the hvac box (old leaves, twigs, pine needles) but down here I would say I'm almost at 8 out of 10 complaints of "I had my a/c serviced and it's not working again after six months to a year...." ends up being the compressor. Leaks as a vapor out of the front seal. I've pumped dye into a few 2 to 3 times and nothing ever showed up until I installed a new compressor and disassembled the old one to find slight traces of dye at the front seal. I put a compressor on my 01 last year. So far, so good. On the subject of the compressor running with the controls "off" is not right. Low charge shouldn't have a thing to do with it either. Someone needs to check the inputs to the compressor as to why it's engaging.

yeah, what dan said. it needs recharged. just had mine fixed last week. it was doin the same thing.

The evaporators in the dash are prone to failure due to debris and water collecting on them I do AC work on the side and changed a few of them.
Big job whole dash comes out and heater box. 8hrs

I paid $800 to have mine replaced
They said it was a known issue of condesation not draining well and rotting the outside forward corner of the evap coils.

...however if you move to the desert like I did, you won't see that problem.
