Bypass filter question...

Greetings everyone,

Pardon the interruption, but I searched all the old posts by every query I could think of, but I'm still trying to find out where to get the oil supply for the Amsoil bypass housing. I understand it is supposed to be drawn from the stock oil filter mount, but I'm not sure of which port/screw should be used. I'm guessing it is the 5/16 or 1/4" plug that sits on the top of the housing.

I have mounted the bypass housing on the front of the engine block, just forward of the intake heater, using an "L" bracket. I'm running the 100 filter, but it looks like I could run the 110 with no problem. I'm getting ready to route the hoses, but I want to be sure of where I am supposed to run the feed line.

Is there anyone out there that has done this mod and can talk me through it, or better yet, post a pic? I like pictures... pictures are good.

Thanks very much!

I don’t have any pictures, but I used the port that comes straight out of the tip of the filter housing. I dumped it back in the oil fill hole with the oil Amsoil oil cap. I can’t remember if it came with the kit or if I bought it separate.

So when you say "tip", that would be the edge, or off of a vertical surface as opposed to the flat, top portion of the housing?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to get it right the first time.

Thanks very much

Whoops, I meant “top”, not tip, I can’t type or spell, lol! Mine had two plugs in the top, one easily assessable, and the other sort of under the manifold behind a tube or bracket. I used the one I could get at. I think it is 1/8” NPT.

Thank you again. I'm pretty sure I know which one it is. I just needed some confirmation. I believe there are two plugs in the top: one small (about 1/8 or 1/4" NPT and the other is about 3/8 or 1/2").

Why don't you just use the adapter plate that AMsoil makes ?

I've talked to a couple of Amsoil dealers who told me that the sandwich adapter plate can work loose on the Cummins engines. They told me that they had customers who had a constant battle of keeping it sealed. Also, they warned me of mounting the filters on the Dodge frame rails due to excessive vibration...
Dunno... Seems like there would be vibration just about anywhere... I guess I'll find out. I'll post pics when I get mine done. If anyone out there needs the drawings and parts list for the filter housing mount, I can email them out. I had a local welder make one up for about $50.00.

ah64id,

Thank you very much. That was exactly what I was looking for. Pictures are good. Words are not so good. I get all confused with the big ones.

carte89,

The bypass filter takes a portion of your oil and super-cleans it every pass through the system. You still have full flow filter that works as normal. Running a bypass filter enables you to run longer between drain intervals and should help extend the life of your engine. If you want to learn more, go to amsoil.com or you can search this forum for amsoil. You should get all the info you ever wanted and more.

Thanks very much everyone.

I put a gauge on mine. Unfortunately it pulses a lot and may not last. It's a 100 lb gauge and I see 70psi at idle cold. Probably should try a 160lb gauge before I ditch the idea.

Also, I tapped the valve cover and return the oil there. Don't like the fill cap idea.

A 100 psi gauge should be plenty. There is an internal bypass of the pump at 75psi. The most I have seen on 32* oil is 80-85 psi.

dott,

did you use a self-tapper or remove the valve cover, if so, was it a pain? I don't like the filler cap much myself but I really don't like the idea of particulates falling through into the cover.

I removed the cover and tapped inside one of the bosses. Perfect place for it. It really wasn't hard. 6 bolts for the plastic cover, about 6 or so bolts for the valve cover. There is a breather on top of mine, still no big deal. Also had to cut a notch in the plastic cover.
